Help ASAP!Dead in the middle of the road

Here's what happened.... Driving the truck, it's pouring the rain, it dies on a busy road. I borrowed a scanner from Autozone and pulled the codes. All I got was 1693 (companion) and 1688. The 1688 looks to be internal fuel injection pump controller failure. What is this? I've talked to a couple guys that have never heard of it. I knew the guys on here would know. So let me have the bad news...

I dont know the numbers. but it sounds like you may have had a VP44 Go out. If there is any way that you can get it towed to the local dealer or shop and have them check the fuel pressure do so. The pusher pump could have gone out on you and starved the VP. Good Luck and let us know what happened.

Had fuel at the filter, drained it out then primed it again just to make sure.... The lift pump was my first thought.

People here think the P0216 is the kiss of death when in reality the 1688 is the REAL spend money now code. You need a VP.

You need a Vp and mre then likely a lift pump as well. After replacing the Vp/Lp make sure you hook up a fuel pressure gauge. This will help prevent this in the future.

If it's still under warranty, take all your toys off, including the velcro and take it in and let the dealer pay for repairs.

As far as the Ip I would say no. There is the Hotrod Vp that will give you a little more power. I think what your talking about is a different lift pump. There are several different ways to go. I'm running the FASS II which is an excellant alterantive to the factory lift pump. As I mentioned earlier, you NEED gauges, especially a fuel pressure gauge. Fuel pressure gauge are a must for ALL 24v trucks. The thing that seems to kill the Ip's are lack of, no fuel pressure.

Does 2100.00 for both pumps and labor sound right?

you can buy a IP for around $1089 and a F.A.S.S pump for around $417 (probly better then the stock on hes going to be ptting on) that's $1506 that around $594 in labor thats a lot i think depeding on his rate and if he knows what he doing a Ip shouldnt take very long at all and installing a FASS is pretty much cake. but its up to you

I changed my VP in an afternoon, well 1800-0100 so it took awhile.
If you are mechanicaly inclined at all it aint that bad, just gotta get those injector lines tight...Anyways,thats what I did,and this is the first of the newer Diesels that I've fooled with,no timeing crap, and as long as you don't drop the key it's cake.
So if you got the time keep the $1000 in labor.
(Advice of a real $$)

These folks have the original LP if you want that, but your better off getting that F.A.S.S. If you can.
Good luck

Now that you have new VP-44, I would also invest in a FASS, or similiar upgrade from the stock lift pump. I upgraded to FASS last year before I had any problems pop up.

I got my truck back it seems to run a little better... The guy ended up waiting on parts so it took longer. After all was said and done it cost me 1900. I just wish Dodge would have th ebrains to shut these things down before the IP goes. You would think that as much as these things cost they would put a pressure gauge on from the factory! I will say this much It'll have one before the end of the week!
