I had the same problem with my 98, and it was the headlight switch.

I would bet its the daylight running module on the drivers inner fender. About a 2 inch square black box. Disconnect it, that should put your lights out. Happened to me when on holidays in eastern canada. I think a new one was around 110.00 Canadian.
They are a sealed unit and is probably ozzing some goop out of it from the back side, and a prone to failure.

Did you smell hot plastic lately?
The Headlight switches in the early 2nd genners had a bad rep for melting.
I think there was a TSB out for them also.

That module turns on your high beams at reduced voltage so that other vehicles can see you, or so they say, (daytime running lights) and yes all Canadian vehicles have them (haven't you noticed).

The only problem you will have now is that when you switch on your highbeams the indicator on the dash will no longer tell you the highbeams are on. If that's OK then you don't need to do anything else. If you don't like it buy a new module or check with a wrecker. Supposedly they are the same for many Dodge/Chrysler vehicles.

Starter contacts.

Don't worry though, they get better with age!

I'm not real sure what your're doing but, I assume that you know that if you turn off your ignition key while the headlights are still on, the lights remain on for awhile (just like they are supposed to). If you want the lights to be off, turn them off BEFORE you turn off the ignition key.

they dont have that option on the 95's pop-pop....new trucks they have the lights stay on for a min and turn off by themselves this is different. But it all working fine now. hey rattlerattle i took off the starter a month ago cause of the clicking turned out that one of the contacts was pretty fried so i sanded it off and sprayed some brake cleaner there...works fine now....but i never actually took the little contacts out of there i did it all while they were in the starter. Are they tough to get out for those who replaced them with the bigger contacts?? cause if its easy to get out then i'll take em off and sand them under as well

I don't know about Canada, but there was a recall for the light switch in the US. Anyway, on my 96. Suggest you take your VIN number to a local dealer and see what they show for your truck.

The starter contacts and plunger are real easy to replace once you have the starter out. About a 5 minute job. Get the heavy duty contacts and a new plunger from Foster Truck Parts, an advertiser on this site. Great service and good parts. Had to replace mine at 115k miles.
