Headlight Problem

Hi I'm 93'r and a Newbie, and I need help !
My headlights go on and off randomly on my 1993 Dodge D-250 Diesel. There is no control over them at all.
A mechanic checked the "Daytime Running Light module, and said that wasn't the problem.
I checked the fuse panel with no results. We also took the dash out and checked the switch. It appears ok as well.
Could it be the headlights themselves? Although it would seem strange if both decided to quit at the same time????
I have exhausted my limited knowledge on this, and I need help !!!!!
Thanks
93'r

RE: Headlight Problem

Rich
It does it both ways, they stay on for a few seconds then off
for 15 -- 20 seconds etc.

A lot of the older trucks had a circuit breaker for the headlights built right into the headlight switch. When the breaker got weak, or somebody overloaded the circuit with brighter headlight bulbs, the breaker would continually trip off, cool down and reset, trip off again, then reset, as long as the headlights were on. Sounds like this is your problem. As long as the circuit breaker isn't plugged into your fusebox (which I don't think it is), it'll be built into your headlight switch. Unless there is a reason for it to trip, like higher performance headlight bulbs, I'd assume it's getting weak and just try a new headlight switch. While the switch is out, have a good look at its connector. If it looks melted or overheated, replace it too.

I had the same symptoms on a '93 dakota. Could be driving down the road and lose lights!!!! Make you wet your pants first time it does it at night, going 65 MPH down a seldom traveled road.

It was the dimmer switch. Replaced it and no more headlight losing power problems.

Hi All
I want to thank all those who helped with my "Headlight Problem"
It is now resolved! The problem was in the switch, which was weakened by the addition of higher powered headlights (Nighthawk). Over time they weakened the switch. The fix: We are installing two relays (one for each
headlight (30 amp) and a new switch of course.
I'm told that this will work as the power goes to the relays rather than the switch.
Thanks again guys .....appreciate the help !
Frank
