Grid heater isn't working right!!!
Grid heater isn't working right!!!
Man I'm getting tired of all this little crap going wrong with my truck! >
My truck has been taking about a second more cranking by the starter to fire up in the morning than it was previously. I just installed a new fuel pressure guage and hi-flow banjos and I was thinking maybe that was causing it. Today the truck started after about 1.5 seconds and quit after about 2 seconds. Then the intake heater would not work at all. I did not notice if it came on before the first fire up because I was fooling with something in the truck. I did notice that it seemed to be off very quick though. I turned the key on and off about 5 times to see if it would come on but no dice.
I finally got it started by cranking it and hitting the accelerator some. Once it started I just revved the engine to about 1200 rpm for a few seconds to keep it running. The heater was not cycling at all. Once I got to work and shut down I waited for about 10 minutes and went out to the truck and now the heater works. The engine smells hot even though my temp guage showed only about 180 degrees.. ???Has anybody had this problem?? These trucks have two heaters w/ two seperate relays which run off of two seperate wires so I find it hard to believe that all of this went bad at the same time.

Re:Grid heater isn't working right!!!
Check the grid heater ground at the air intake horn. I had an intermitent problem with my grid heaters. I went to a car audio shop and got some heavier wire and bombed it.
Re:Grid heater isn't working right!!!
I'm gonna try that. It seems to work fine when it is not really cold out. It just seems to crap out in the early morning hours when I really need it. I went to get my new Lift pump from Cummins this afternoon
and it was cycling properly and doing just fine. ??? Maybe it was just a fluke... [undecided]

Just for Giggles, you might want to check and clean the ground connections from the batteries to the engine block.
If they're loose, you could have troubles from the heaters finding their own path to ground through the harness.

Re:Grid heater isn't working right!!!
what I do is have my block heater start about 2 hours before I leave for work and the wait to start light doesn't even come on and you get oil pressure a lot faster. Timers are cheap, get them at home depot.
Re:Grid heater isn't working right!!!
This the air intake heater I'm talking about yomitch. It worked fine this morning. It may have just been a fluke yesterday but I'm gonna check all my grounds this weekend. Thanks for the replies..
