GAS in a DIESEL!!!!???
Hey,
First off this wasn't me! My buddy called this afternoon and said his 01 truck dies flat out at 55mph. I asked a few questions and got the fact that he had just filled up out of him. We talked about the filter waxing ( it's only 10 degrees here) cuz he filled up at a small station. After changing the filter another mechanic happened by, and I talked with him on the phone. he said there was a stron GAS smell!!!! Oh No i said!!!!! His injection pump was just put on like 5k miles ago. Any chance it survived? He had about 1/2 tank of diesel and added like 10 gallons of gas on top of it. *
He apparently cannot read and assumes that all pumps with green handles are diesel
* After going back to the station he found it to be 89 octane gasoline.
What do ya think? new pump?

He'll be fine as long as he can get the fuel out. If he took out 3/4 tank and added diesel it should run again. Then add a few gallons of the contminated fuel to each fill up to burn it up.
Do a search, it's been covered before.

If the tank is 30 gallons, half is 15, add 10 and you have almost a 50-50 mix, pretty heavy on the gas, even if you fill it the rest of the way. I would drain it and flush the system and he should be OK. Not the first one to post a gas-in-diesel problem.
I'll tell him about the wife scapegoat! Why did it quit then? Did all the gas he put in go to the bottom or something? He is draining it tonight and I told him to even put a couple gallons in and drain it again just to be sure. Thanks for the reassurance guys! I am really liking this forum, and loving my Dodge!
This would be a great subject for Myth Busters.
DO NOT put gas into a diesel engine. I thought by now everyone would know that.
Don't believe me? HERE'S AN EXPLAINATION
A few highlights:
Gasoline and alcohols hit diesel fuel right where it hurts the most. Those light thin fuels will lower the cetane number and lubricity.
Gasoline mixed in diesel fuel will inhibit combustion in a diesel engine and diesel fuel mixed in gasoline will ignite too soon in a gasoline engine
Diesel fuel has a lower combustion temperature than gasoline. The fuel injectors depend on the fuel burning at the correct rate and temperature for a long life. If the combustion temperature is raised long enough, the gums and varnishes in gasoline will start to cook right in the fuel injector and turn into carbon. These microscopic carbon particles will abrade the nozzle. High combustion temperatures alone will shorten fuel injector life, gasoline makes the problem worse.
Gasoline and alcohols do have an anti-gel effect on diesel fuel, but these fuels are too thin and will hurt the lubricity. Alcohols work as a water dispersant in small amounts, but also attract water in large amounts. Diesel fuel is already hydrophilic (attracts water) so why add to the problem. The old timers got away with this because high sulfur diesel fuel had enough lubricity to take some thinning. Today’s low sulfur diesel fuels have adequate lubricity, but I wouldn’t put anything in the tank that would thin out the fuel, reduce lubricity, or attract water.

I can't believe what I just saw at the station while I was getting fuel.
A guy put diesel in his Powerstroke, then pulled forward to the gas pump and added some gas to his tank. If he was driving a Dodge I might have told him of the harm he was doing...but oh well.
But I know this...You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. So many people will continue doing this. It's funny that someone will add gas to their diesel because they "heard it was the thing to do", show them the facts about it and they don't believe it.

hey there is a reason that the gas nozzle will fit in a diesel but a diesel nozzle wont fit a gasser. Its because MOST diesel drivers are smarter
One of my buddies girlfriends was trying to pump gas while we were in the car. She was out there swearing and cussing saying it wouldnt fit. We got out to see what was going on and she was trying to shove the diesel nozzle into her Saturn gas receptacle

My understanding is if the percentage of gas causes the engine to stall out you're ok as far as engine damage. It's when the engine continues to run that major damage results. The guy adding 30% is very misinformed and just causing a slow death for his engine..
That's right Bill - one of my guys filled our 1st PowerStroke with unleaded and drove it 'til it died... after dropping, draining and refilling, that thing ran just as good as before (which admittedly wasn't too good!

I did it too-gas in diesel last fall
I bought a 2006 in Jan. last year, and every time I filled up I used a green handle pump. I went to another city to a different station(Sinclair, which we don't have in our area), pulled up to the pump and started pumping from the green pump without reading or even giving it another thought last fall. About the time the pump shut off the first time, I realized my mistake as the diesel for that station was a yellow handle. I had filled my tank with unleaded. I told the attendent, and he said it has happened at least 2 dozen times since he had worked there. To make a long story short, I pulled the filler hose from between the fill cap and the tank in order to get a siphon hose into the tank (didn't work from the fill cap); and I siphoned about 3 gallons less out that I had filled with gas. I figured that I had about 7 gallons of diesel in the tank before I added the gas. I then re-filled the tank with diesel (about 3 more gallons of diesel than the gas I had filled as I tried to really squeeze all the gallons I could into it). I realized that I still had somewhat of a mix in the tank. Anyway, no problems at all even though I was pulling a 20,000# trailer and load. I am glad that I didn't move the vehicle until I got the gas cans, siphoned out the mixed fuel, and re-fueled with diesel. No harm done in my case, but a valuable lesson about not assuming without reading. I.E., I used the mixed-fuel a can at a time in a tractor everytime that I needed to fuel the tractor, and evenly used it up. By the way, I have told everyone I know my story so they do not do the same mistake that I did.
There was a certain truck stop within towing distance to where I work that had green handles on various gas pumps. I would get a few tow-ins every month from that. They must have finally changed them......or people started to read more carefully, haven't seen one come in for quite awile.
