Fuel Problem

A buddy of mine just bought a used 2000 dually. He was driving home one day and it just died. He said he was on the interstate,
running 80 mph and she fell down. Well a week later and 121.00 the local dealer put 5 gallons of fuel in it, and cracked the lines. It fired right up so they sent him home with no explaniation. Well last monday night,
we went to town, and it died again. The fuel gauge said quarter of a tank, which was the same level it died at
the first time. I put fuel in it, and cracked the lines, and it fired again.

Now do you think the sending unit is bad, or is there something else that it could be. When the truck is running,
his fuel pressure is great so I don't think its a lift pump.

Can anybody help?

Re:Fuel Problem

Has he tried calculating his milage by hand to see if the sending units toasted? ???

These trucks are famous for defective tank sending units.

Are you talkin about that good lookin black [ or is it yellow yet ] truck ?

Sounds like the sendin unit is off.

Re:Fuel Problem

Ed,
The only reason I'm not countering with an equally smart arsed remark is I can't really think of one right now. The old brain is fried. I was so tired when I got home yesterday, I only drank half a beer, 12 ouncer at that. May have to talk to the boss about letting us drink a few cold ones at work. Might boost morale.
I'm glad I'm not a new guy just starting a career in this "green mother". Classic example, one idiot who has been working to get his required 3 hours of english before attending Warrant Officer Candidate School. Took him 5 YEARS to finally get those three hours. He went to Fort Rucker and flunked out the third day. They sent him home where upon his arrival, he was presented with a copy of all the tests to be taken. He returned and was in the process of flunking out AGAIN when the alert came down. He was then "fast tracked" through the course with an average of 75% and is being futher "fast tracked" through the technicial phase. Just so he can deploy and fill the slot. There are plenty of people that meet and exceed the minimum qualifications. However, percentages and quotas have to be met. Opportunities have to be made available, reguardless of the individual level of stupidity.
When we get away from utilizing KNOWLEDGE and ABILITIES as requirements for placement in leadership positions, and start utilizing everything else but religious preference as qualifications, the only result I can see is additional body bags. It's bad when the primary concern is a combat patch on the right shoulder and a CIB (Combat Infantry Badge) over the left pocket.
Maybe I'm still living in an old world of 30 odd years ago. Maybe I'm dreaming about old chiefs and mustangs that actually cared more about the welfare of those under them rather than themselves.
Maybe I'm just dreaming......................

Re:Fuel Problem

Sorry about getting totally off the fuel subject. Just seemed to be a good time to vent.
Something that may or may not relate to the fuel problems, but might be something to look at.
We had some fuel problems with our SkyTracks. They have a 12V 5.9, rotary type injector pump (without electronics), and a lift pump. When the fuel level got down to 3/8th or so, fuel starvation set in. After everything from the injectors back was replaced, it was eventually found that the lift pump was sucking air through minute cracks in the fuel lines. It only occured when the fuel level reached a point that head pressure from the fuel tank went below zero.
Like I say, might be worth looking at the fuel lines.

Re:Fuel Problem

Shortround, I got plenty of revenge for ya when I was stationed at Fort Rucker.

As for the first question, 1/4 tank is on the extreme side, so could be mechanicle trouble. Keep in mind, the fuel is cooling the injector pump and returning to the tank. This is warming/expanding the fuel in the tank. When you get below 1/4 tank and shut down, you wont show as much when you restart and the fuel has cooled.
