Fuel lift pump?

I have a 99 cummins with 70k on it, no modifications, just your standard maintenance. Went to clean up the battery terminals and check the fluids last Saturday. I also decided to drain the fuel/water separator to check for water and junk in the fuel. Left her alone till yesterday and tried to start it up. She ran hard for a minute and died. Tried several times to start her but she would not fire. Played around with the fuel today "turning the key on and listening to the lift pump run and trying to vent air out the filter canister and at the inlet of the injection pump. I can not seam to get fuel out of the lift pump. Lift pump is running and sounds normal. Also it may sound crazy but I am hearing a light knocking sound around the fuel tank. Almost like air going back to the tank. Any sugestions would be of great help. I do not have a code reader as I have never needed one before this. I am thinking I should by one and a good set of gauges.

Thanks Travis

Sounds like you simply have a dead lift pump. It had probably been dead for some time, and worked fine with the VP sucking fuel from the tank, until you drained the water separator and introduced an air bubble into the system. 90% of the lift pumps will die and still sound like normal. They just stop pumping fuel.

Thanks that make sense, it just seams weird to me that it just stops with no warning at all. Know of any good aftermarket lift pumps?

SOunds like you need to crack a line open and purge the air out, then install a fuel gauge so you will KNOW if you have a LP issue.

Glacier diesel makes a good pump. It should be upgraded while you are replacing it anyways before you toast your IP

Just bought a Fass 95. I like the machined housing and it just looks like a quality product. Hope that IP is ok.
