Fuel leak (still searching...)

Now I'm really curious? I've been chasing this fuel leak for a couple of weeks now. It's really annoying due to the diesel vapors from the drip's hitting the starter and such...

I got a good Idea from tmiller24 about using an aerosol foot powder on the lines and fittings to see the fuel better when it leaks, but I could not find a leak at an Idle. When I got in the truck and went around the block, the fan had blown a thin coating all around the intake manifold (under the fuel lines.) I installed new banjo bolt gaskets today and steam-cleaned the area, but now it's saturated again. Maybe the fuel pressure increases when the turbo spools up, I'm not sure.

Does anybody know if there is more line pressure (Post injection pump) when the RPM's go up? I'm not finding any leak at an Idle... maybe I could have somebody sit in the truck and give it some throttle, or mabye I could remove the hood and go for a ride in the engine compartment?? (I'm about at that point)

Guess I'm still recovering from the "mis-pump", and this is a leftover problem. The only thing that I did was remove the Banjo bolts, and crack #1, #2, #3, and #4 injector. The fuel is coming from behind #1 (it's dry) and behind the intake/grid heater somewhere?

Any Ideas?Any Ideas?

[move]Go away bugs...[/move]

Pete

Re:Fuel leak (still searching...)

Pete,

The 99 has the fuel heater in the top of the fuel filter housing, and uses a different design that all the other 24 valves. I suspect that the leak is from the fuel heater, and suggest you turn it off, tap the starter enough to start the lift pump but not enough to start the thing. The lift pump should run for about 45 seconds, and that will be when it is generating the most pressure on the input side of the system. Then crawl into the engine compartment with a really bright light and check your test port fittings, fuel inlet, fuel outlet, and water in fuel sensor connector.

Also check the nitrile seals (synthetic rubber) that seals the thing together. There are three screw head bolts inside under the fuel filter that you remove/tighten to keep it together.

Do not use powder, you get any in the system and you are screwed to the tune of all new components from the injection pump to the injectors and all the lines.

Re:Fuel leak (still searching...)

Thanks for the input. I'll keep looking.

[move]I'M REALLY FRUSTRATED WITH THIS DARN THING...[/move]

Here's where I'm at with this thing: I've got all the fittings and injector lines tight, and at an Idle the thing doesn't leak at all! I can rev it up, put a load to it, or whatever and it stays dry. The min I take it out on the road, just around the block, the alum top of the intake block (under the grid heater and injector lines) from #2 injector back is soaked with fuel. The smell is enough to knock a buzzard off of a gut pile, Bad fumes/steam...

I'm not going to take it to a dealer, cuz what the heck are they going to do? Better yet, it is still under warranty isn't it?

Hmmmm? I'll sleep on it. Thanks for the info, hope others may have some advice-cause it's getting old.

Pete

Re:Fuel leak (FOUND THE LEAK...)

HEY, I F0UND THE CULPRIT!

This may sound pretty strange, but I got tired of not being able to "duplicate the problem..." like the shop say's.

SO... I zip-tied a bright camping light under the hood behind the intake elbow, and did the same with an old 8mm video camera. Wha-la! Once the turbo spooled up and the throttle was jammed to the floor, a great big spurting leak arose from #2 injector line. As you may know- #2 sits right behind that elbow and it's hard to get a wrench on it. So, I had to remove the elbow and grid heater to get it tight. How it got loose is beyond me, I'm just glad to have it fixed!

Just some info for you guys (and gals) to ponder.

Technology at it's finest. Maybe we should recommend this troubleshoot idea to all the dealers out there... (right!)

Thanks for the input that I recieved on this one, now I'm just looking for some good Dually mud flaps for the rear end.

Pete

Had pictures in my head of a Ram hurdling down the road at WOT,
hood up,
Pete (McGyver) feet planted firmly on the front bumper,
one hand holding on,
the other making "turn it up" motions,
eyes fixed on fuel lines,
yelling at the unnamed driver

"Faster faster!, I still can't see the leak"

phox

Re:Fuel leak (still searching...)

Yea, I actually pondered that for a bit (under the hood!), but decided to charge up the 'ole 8mm camera instead. I'm a Deputy Sheriff here in our county also, so I figured it would not be the best example to the neighbors and all ...

After running the film on my TV, it had some vibration in it, but you could plainly see the leak. You all would have laughed at the short clip, I almost wish it would have been digital so I could have linked it and let you all see it... I figured that it may start a thread of "things you shouldn't try at home..." video clips, or a DTR funniest home videos or something.

Cheers!

Pete
