Fuel Filter
Fuel Filter
Hey Guys - I feel stupid here but I know someone can help. I have a 2004 Cummins Dodge with 36,000 miles on it. I have done all the oil changes myself but never the fuel filter. I bought one last night - but where the heck does it go? I see it must be a canister type - and probably not hard to change - but where is it at?
Thank You!

It's the canister on the drivers side of the engine back toward the firewall. Takes a 1-/8" or 1-1/4" socket to fit the hex on top. Mine came off with a large cressent wrench. The filter fits snug to the cap of the canister so when the cap comes off the filter will lift out with it. I used a metal bowl to set it in so I didn't drip fuel all over everything.

No reason to feel stupid. Open hood, look at the brake mastercylinder. Now look straight down in between the engine and the mastercylinder and you'll see the canister attached to the side of the block. Has a 1 1/8 nut on the top of it. Just put a 1 1/8 socket on a 8" extension and a wratchet and loosen it up. Remove old filter, replace the o-rings with the ones that came with your new filter. Before you put the filter back in there is a little drain valve ( yellow ) on the side of the canister, open it up make sure you have a little bucket under the truck and it will drain any water, dirt, or junk thats left in the canister. wipe out with a rag once empty. Put filter in, tighten the top, then go in your truck and just bump the starter and leave the key in the on position, you will here the lift pump running and it is refilling the canister. Do that twice and she should fire right up.
The canister is bare metal with a black lid on the drivers side of the engine. A 1 1/8" socket unscrews the lid. On my 01, I found that a ½" socket wrench with a 1 foot extension with the 1 1/8 socket work the best for opening the canister. With the 1 foot extension the wrench stays above the engine and I can swing the wrench 360°.
Thank You so much! Wasnt even a five minute deal! Easy. The dealership wanted $80 bucks to change the fuel and air filter. I bought them both for $39 bucks at Autozone and did it myself - just didnt know where that one was!

Very reasonable filter prices, they even sell sets (oil, air & fuel).

There is a Cummins dealer in Little Rock just off I-30. Exit at 65th street and turn south on the side street and you are there. Easy to see from the freeway.
I have been buying my filters there and they keep records, so if I ever need proof for warranty work I know they will have it.
