Fan removal
Fan removal
Anyone know how to hold the fan pulley from turning while trying to break loose the BIG mounting bolt?
I know how to keep the motor from turning once I can get the pulley sationary, just can't figure out how to stop that pulley!

there are a couple of them , trying to keep the box ready for anything that shows up , the one I like the best is they are just stamped plate steel for the size needed , what ever the size needed to go on the outside of the four farthest apart bolts that hold the pulley on, so it looks like a very large wrench , then when I went to take mine off for the winter , the Mac guy should me something for the same Co. but it was univesal , what didn't like about the 1st is the number of differant sizes you need , the 2nd is harder to use , if your only working on your own get the wrench type, then a lot of post recomend using a hommer and punch , the punch is put on the cornner of the nut and hit with hammer this should crack it lose , but this type of work I try to avoid becouse of how it apiles force , bad for the nut , bearings ect.
And don't forget that its a left hand thread , not righty tighty , lefty losey.

If you mean the big nut in the center, when I did mine, I just clamped a vise-grip on the nut, and laid a 2X4 against the vise-grip, and smacked the 2X4 with a hammer. It popped loose right away. Its left hand thread, so loosen it clockwise, or down on the drivers side. Leave the belt on until its loose.
Even though I have the correct tools to remove the fan I always use a long drift and a three pound sledge hammer--- place the drift on the right side of the fan nut flat and don't be shy, give it a good whack. Often the fan will then come off easily without even having to hold the pulley. Some folks don't even use a wrench, an air impact chisel with a blunt tip on the right side of the nut flat will loosen it also.
Thanks for all the replies!
Redleg and I were trying to get the fan off MY truck to get at an auxilliary pulley that is mounted just behind it, so that it could be installed on HIS truck. It sticks out just forward of the serpentine pulley for the water pump. The big problem is that this auxilliary pulley has large round holes in it that cover the small bolts that hold the serpentine pulley in place, so we couldn't use those little bolts to hold everything from turning when we tried to loosen the BIG nut.
I didn't have anything long enough to use as a punch, to get down behind the fan so that I could give the big nut a whack. We finally gave up on the idea of getting this pulley apart, and resigned ourselves that a new one will have to be acquired.
Thanks again for all the quick replies, they are VERY much appreciated!
