Fan Clutch On My Buddys 2000 2500 Keeps Going Out.

Hello a buddy of mine has a 2000 2500 24valve that is bone stock nothing added to the mixture and while towing the fan clutch stops working and causes the truck to over heat. he has replaced the fan clutch twice and is on a new fan clutch now. the fan clutch seems to be working while empty but it never has a chance to come on. Once a load is put on the trailer the fan clutch quits and causes the engine to over heat he did not say weather or not it was throwing a code. He has also replaced the thermostat I am also going to post this in the help form too so I can get him back on the road.

fan clutch from what he says seems to working intimately it wont over heat pulling a empty trailer but as soon as there is any load in it it over heats in to the red mark. this is the second fan clutch he has put in it and he has also as stated put a new thermostat in it. what would cause fan clutches to go out like that. i need to make it down to his shop cause he said the radiator was clean no oil contamination

Well, I'm sure it's not the towing or the radiator that's causing the fan clutch to go... and normally, pulling a heavy load at speed won't make the CTD overheat anyway.

How many miles on the truck? When did this problem begin? How heavy is he towing? There's something missing, here...

If he is buying a good clutch unit it is more likely not the problem ! is the radiator clean? oil from the puke bottle may have stopped air flow in front of the clutch and blocking the heat to the spring on the clutch fan. the radiators and cooling systems are more then adequate for a stock truck.

I am going to go with rebal on this one. It doesnt take long to pull the rad out and if there are any miles on this truck I am sure the rad with have a lovely coating of goo in the fins.

ya i am kind of thinking the same thing i just did mine and it did not need it but i loosened my radiator up at the top and tilted it a hair back to gain access to the front of it and mine had a bunch of stuff in it.
