Erratic Oil Pressure

Today my oil pressure guage dropped to zero and the check gauges light came on. It took me about 2 minutes to get pulled into a gas station. I checked the oil and it was very low. I had to add 3 quarts. After that, the oil pressure guage is very erratic. I don't know much about the lubrication system and was hoping someone could enlighten me. Earlier when I got ready to park the truck the oil pressure guage came up and it looked like it is going to stay this time. I am hoping it will at least. If it doesn't, what do I need to check? I know the oil is not low now. Is it possible to get air into the system that has to work itself out? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. I need to get on the road in the morning and worry that something may be wrong.

Re:Erratic Oil Pressure

I'm not sure why it was low. I'm assuming that it just burned it but I could be wrong. I've only put 10,000 miles on it since I bought the truck but this is the first time this has happened. I've never noticed it leaking oil and I just changed the oil myself about 2,000 miles ago. Today was the first indication of any problems at all. And it may not have been as low as I initially thought because it didn't sit for very long when I checked the oil. It was on level ground though.

Re:Erratic Oil Pressure

the motor only holds 11 quarts including the filter. 4 quarts is a gallon. If you overfill the system it will push it oout the rear main seal. Depending on where the leak is it is possible to leak out several quarts .

Re:Erratic Oil Pressure

UPDATE:<br>My oil guage continued to work intermittently all day yesterday. Sometimes it would work for 10 or 15 minutes and then drop to zero, etc. I took it in to the dealership today and it was a faulty oil pressure sensor. It cost me $336 dollars to get it replaced!!! :'( The sensor itself was $240. There is only 53,000 miles on my engine and it wasn't covered under the warranty. Plus, they will only warranty the new sensor for 12 months. I'm feeling a little sore on the back end after today.
