Erratic Oil Pressure
Erratic Oil Pressure
Today my oil pressure guage dropped to zero and the check gauges light came on. It took me about 2 minutes to get pulled into a gas station. I checked the oil and it was very low. I had to add 3 quarts. After that, the oil pressure guage is very erratic. I don't know much about the lubrication system and was hoping someone could enlighten me. Earlier when I got ready to park the truck the oil pressure guage came up and it looked like it is going to stay this time. I am hoping it will at least. If it doesn't, what do I need to check? I know the oil is not low now. Is it possible to get air into the system that has to work itself out? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. I need to get on the road in the morning and worry that something may be wrong.

Re:Erratic Oil Pressure
There have been scattered problems with defective/failed oil pressure sending units - that's most likely your problem, a good check is to test with a mechanical guage if you can come up with one. If you weren't sitting level and careful to let the engine sit long enough before checking the oil, you MIGHT not have been as low as you thought - but easy enough to re-check it now and see if it's overfilled. Even if it was 3 quarts low, that shouldn't cause total loss of oil pressure with a 3 gallon crankcase capacity...
Re:Erratic Oil Pressure
I'm not sure why it was low. I'm assuming that it just burned it but I could be wrong. I've only put 10,000 miles on it since I bought the truck but this is the first time this has happened. I've never noticed it leaking oil and I just changed the oil myself about 2,000 miles ago. Today was the first indication of any problems at all. And it may not have been as low as I initially thought because it didn't sit for very long when I checked the oil. It was on level ground though.

Re:Erratic Oil Pressure
the motor only holds 11 quarts including the filter. 4 quarts is a gallon. If you overfill the system it will push it oout the rear main seal. Depending on where the leak is it is possible to leak out several quarts .

UPDATE:<br>My oil guage continued to work intermittently all day yesterday. Sometimes it would work for 10 or 15 minutes and then drop to zero, etc. I took it in to the dealership today and it was a faulty oil pressure sensor. It cost me $336 dollars to get it replaced!!! :'( The sensor itself was $240. There is only 53,000 miles on my engine and it wasn't covered under the warranty. Plus, they will only warranty the new sensor for 12 months. I'm feeling a little sore on the back end after today.
