Erratic Oil Pressure

Howdy,
well, I've got a question about my '03 dodge. I've noticed that my oil pressure gauge is all over the map. AFAIK the actual numbers on the guage are different up here than yours, so I'll be as generic as I can.
When I start it up, it sits at about a 3/4-11/16 position (assuming far left is 0 and far right is 1, and dead center is 1/2) but it also falls down to nearly 1/4, or just a hair above the redline. When accelerating, it steadily increases from 1/4 to about 7/16, and when the accelerator is released, it falls back to 1/4. No codes have been thrown. If my oil pressure was steadily lower, I would assume an injector problem or something like that, but its all over the place. Anyone have any ideas??
Edit** Bad sending unit??

If it is like the newer 3rd gen's its a cluster controller and not just a gauge. You don't want to know the cost unless you still "got warranty".

Put a manual gauage in for piece of mind.

If it were me I would rather see it work properly. Now then , do I know how to fix it ? ...No.

Check HERE
I would start with the pressure sensor first.

there is no oil pressure sensor on our engines. there is a 6psi oil pressure switch. anything over 6 psi and the ecm controls the movement of the gauge in the cluster according to what the coolent temp is, the air temp is, the engine speed... it calculates what the approx. oil pressure should be and shows that...

above about 41 kPa (6 psi) the cluster holds the gauge needle at a point near the middle increment within the
