Question Engine just shut off

Well it looks like i need some help! Driving on the interstate with the cruise control on around 70mph when the engine shut off, no warning lights, puff of smoke, nothing, just lost power, electrical system still on, when glanced at guages speedometer, temp, fuel and voltage were working, tach and oil pressure at zero. tried to restart, no luck, engine turned over felt like no compression and finally check engine light came on. It is at the dealership right now, if anyone has some info on what i can expect or if it has happened to them let me know what they have found. it would be greatly appreciated.

According to his profile, it's a 1999 2500 4x4.

bummer, usually when they just shut down it is fuel related, which unfortunately is usually costly. first thing to do is verify fuel pressure, this can tell you where to start looking, if you are lucky it is just a lift pump and you can save the VP44, if you have average luck you just bought a new VP44, if you are mechanically inclined I would save myself a couple G's and tackle it myself. Perhaps you ran out of fuel? I know it sounds dumb, but the dodge fuel gauge is less then dependable, another stretch could be the shut off solenoid but if you have fuel in the tank and the filter is clean history points to LP/VP44....sorry for your loss, GET GAUGES!

thanks for the help, it is a 1999 ram, and it does have fuel put around 20 gal in it, replaced the fuel filter last oil change not too long ago about 3k miles, on a brighter note hopefully the extended warranty i bought through the credit union covers it. I will be getting guages soon and a couple of other mods to help. by the way talked to the service manager and prelim diaonostics haven't told them anything so we will see and i will let you all know what happens!

I've heard if you loose the crank position sensor that the motor will just shut down. Need to open injector lines and crank truck to see if you are getting fuel to the injectors.

If you can get the codes pulled you will sure have a good idea as where to start, if it were me I would add a pusher/fuel upgrade/fass/air dog etc, as a first step because no matter what you will not get hurt on it, pretty much just money in the bank.

another thing to check is in the pdc on the driverside front fender under the hood, there is a relay for the fuel system, a friend of mine puked his last week....because of a lp failure, there might be a maxi fuse for as well I don't recall for sure on your truck but it is an easy thing to check.

I do appreciate all the posts trying to help me out, well I got the call it was the lift pump that decided it had enough and died a quick painless death. I will know more on monday when i go in and talk face to face with the service dept. Now i know that one of the first things to get is the pillar mount 3 guage set and a couple of items that High Country suggested, time to work some overtime to pay for my toys, you know the saying: "The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys!!!!!"

Your're very lucky. My lift pump died at 88K, but did not take out my VP44 because it died a slow death. I installed a FASS at 158K and low and behold the VP44 had enough by 160K. Keep an eye on the VP44 and get yourself a FP guage in addition to the others.
