Electrical problem - instrument cluster
Electrical problem - instrument cluster
'00 24v CTD 2500. At "wait to start", no guages (tach, oil, batt., fuel, etc.). At startup, still no guages, warning lights and bells come on including check engine, ABS, and low fuel indicator (even with plenty of fuel) and stay on until I shut down. Also, message "No BuS" comes on in the odometer LED. All other systems work fine (except I have no idea how fast I'm going or how much fuel I have). I research a tech service bulletin 08-05-00 (bad cluster wiring harness) which wasn't the problem. The DEALER says I need a new cluster ($795 to install, incl parts). Any other thoughts? Also, cluster is quoted at $539; any web access instruction for installing new cluster?
Thanks
Re:Electrical problem - instrument cluster
Have the dealer scan the codes and test for a faulty connector or ground. You can check some of this yourself by making certain that you have good engine to battery, and engine to frame grounds.

I believe these also had a problem with the panel ground, but would have to research to be sure.

I do not recommend swapping the panel yourself because of the ABS system complexities. It is just too easy for someone to trigger the air bag without realizing it, and then the costs are about four times what you would spend for the dealer to swap the module.
Re:Electrical problem - instrument cluster
The "no bus" code could be as simple as a dirty, or disconnected connecter somewhere.

I'd check all the connecters and give them a good cleaning followed by a coating of dielectric grease before reconnection.

Pay particular attention to any and all ECM/PCM connections.

phox
Re:Electrical problem - instrument cluster
Exact same thing happened with my 01. I did what phox recommended and it cleared right up. Just disconnected all plugs, blew them out with low pressure compressed air, and hooked them back up. I didn't use dielectric grease. To clear the check engine light, disconnect the positive battery cables for a half hour, and while you're at it, do an APPS reset. This procedure is easy and included in the tech facts area of this board. $795........sheezzzz
