Electrical Help

Recently the radio and the dome lights will stay on even if the key is out of the ignition. The only way they will shut off is if I leave the key in and turn the key forward. However when the key is in this position it is impossible to take it out. So I have to leave the key in it unlocked in order for everything to be turned off. Any help as to what is causing the problem and/or how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Jason

Sounds like one of the door switches isn't working.

Then you may have a bad ignition switch.

Is there anyway to test to see if it is indeed the ignition switch? I would hate to go buy one and that not solve the problem. Also do I just need to purchase an ignition switch or do I also have to buy the ignition lock cylinder as well? Thanks

Sounds like an ignition switch to me. Need a wiring diagram, and be able to know which wires should have power when in the different positions of the ign. switch. They aren't real expensive, and were a known problem on the 2nd gen trucks. There was actually a recall on them due to overheating caused by the blower motor circuit. If your's hasn't been done, it is still covered under the recall. PM me your vin and I can tell you if it has been done.

And no......you can remove the lock cylinder from the old ign. switch, and put in the new one. Also.....you'll need a set of tamper proof Torx bits to replace it. Fairly easy job as long as the wiring isn't burned. You can get the recall kit from the Dodge dealer if the wiring is burned, and for some reason they don't cover it under the recall.

Where can I buy the ignition switch? Should I try the local Dodge dealership or someplace else? Napa says they carry it for $104.00. Is that standard amount for a new switch? Thanks

If it was me I'd just get it from NAPA but it doesn't hurt to see what dealer wants or shop around. If you can wait a week, go online and you might find a better deal. Does the $100 include the cylinder lock...they are usually seperate.

I'd go for the NAPA one.

Does the steering wheel LOCK when you turn the key to the OFF posn? If not there is a small linkage/rod (park lock slider) with a slot in it that is binding up. Just a little lube will cure. If not it's the ign sw.
