Duramax start and die

I have friend at work that has an 02 Duramax. The truck will start every time but often will die just after it starts. It has a primer on the fuel filter housing in the engine compartment and after priming it cranks right up and runs fine. I have seen him do this twice, tonight in the rain. He has checked his fuel lines and says no problem with them. I was wondering if there is anyone that has any experience or knowledge of these things that might have any suggestions that might help him out. My advice was to trade it. T.I.A. John K

I'm not familar with them, but it sounds like it's loosing prime. There is a leak somewhere. Either an internal check valve or a rubber line with cracks in it. You may want to post this up on Dieselplace.com. They're a duramax forum. They may be better to help than us Cummins guys!

As far as I know, the Dmax's don't have a low pressure fuel pump, so, like said before, he's probably losing prime before the CP3. Look at the lines, see if you see a damp spot. A lot of times, the lines will crack where the come out of the tank. (not sure if that is a chevy problem or not...)

I would double check the filter as well. The seal on the filter gasket is very important as they do not have a lift pump. Its vacuum draw from the tank.

Thanks for the input. He said he checked his fuel lines but im sure some of it is in a difficult location to see very easily. I suggested replacing the fuel filter and seal gasket to eliminate that first. I have no experience with GM fuel systems so I did not now whether or not he has a lift pump in the tank. I had a Ford F 250 gasser that would not start after it sat for a few days without priming it at the carb. It ran fine but after sitting a week or so had to be primed again. Changed the fuel pump, accellerator pump and powervalve which did not help. Blew out all the fuel lines and then inspected all the steel line and hoses and found the hose on the suction nipple on the top of the tank split at the hose clamp. That fixed it. Thanks again for the suggestions guys. John
