Exclamation Dealer miss diagnose

Good evening all

I took my 05 2500 to the Dodge shop today for some clatering coming from the front end.... The Mech said it was the ideler pulley. I got a replacement from the auto parts store couse we all know the delear charges to much.

My dalema is it did not fix the problum. With the belt off I found the very top pully had some play in it. I know this to be the prob. How do I finde anouther one and how do I educate the dealer mec.

Number 3 is idler pulley, which one did you replace?

1 - Generator Pulley
2 - Water Pump Pulley
3 - Idler Pulley
4 - Power Steering Pump Pulley
5 - Radiator Fan Pulley
6 - Crankshaft Pulley
7 - Automatic Tensioner

The pulley you are describing is likely #3, and it should have zero play. It is an idler that should be replaced when the tensioner is replaced.

Your nit going to re-educate their guys. Most dealer mechanics simply take a symptom, look at a chart and do what the chart says. Especially when it come to a diesel vehicle. Occasionally you'll find one that really knows his stuff, but those guys are getting shafted by their employers and having to find other work. it's a tragedy. It's all about getting max profit.

So the tech says it is the idler, the OP takes the belt off and says yep its the idler wheel (but he purchased a tensioner) and you think the tech needs re education?

I'm thinking likely, probably, mostly not, but then, I'm a "mechanic" not a "technician"

Good luck with it.

Well I have changed the Automatic Tensioner pully and the Idler Pully. With no luck. It still sounds like rocks in a can in the center of the radiator. Could it be the fan hub or any parts going with the pump????

I am in a different division (industrial) but I do try to help.

Yes, the sound can be the fan clutch. With a cold engine, engage the dis-engage the AC and see if the sound changes.

You could also do a short run with the belt off and see if the noise goes away. Anything to isolate the issue will help.

Fan hub bearing is making the noise, I have changed a few over the years so stop chasing your tail around.. Remove fan clutch and shroud. Four bolts and the fan hub and bracket will come off. Bearing needs to be pressed out and in after removing center bolt.

Remove pulley #4 and then remove bracket with bearing. 25+ years Dodge experience, not bragging just fact.
