DEAD! LP? please help.

Hi, to all. I wish my first post was under better circumstances but here goes.

OK, Driving home for the weekend, pulled into rest stop and parked and the truck stalled. Started right back up and died again. Unloaded BD and tried again. After a few tries it started and I was on my way. 150 miles later got off the highway and it died again. Had a fuel filter with me so I changed it. Now the canister isn't filling up with the key on and I dont even hear the pump. Checked the connector on the pump for current and it shows 8 volts.
Shouldn't it be 12 volts? I looked for relays in the fuse panel and I don't see one for fuel pump, only one for fuel heater. I'm showing DTC p0628. I hope you guys can help. TIA Dave.

From your description sounds like Lp died. Time for a FASS, BD or other brand of frame mount lift pump. Other option if still under warranty is to have dealer install in tank pump, not as good a choice as others but works OK. I do not think you can find the filter mounted pump any longer but try a local Cummins dealer also.

Just an observation...but I have YET to see ANY issue pertaining to the in tank lift pump whether it be an 05 or newer that was born with one, or a truck that has been retrofitted.

......and grab a small hammer, larger socket, rock.....whatever it takes. Bump the starter so you'll go into the 20 sec pump prime and beat on that pump. It may help you get it started if you need to move the truck. I've even had customers call in and that method worked to at least get them in to the shop.

Well I beat on it a few times with no luck.
donhov- awesome idea, I called local cummins dealer and they said they can get me home any way. I'm headed that way now to give it a shot.

If it works to get me home, I'll be putting that GDP kit on there. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Well the cummins dealer had a pump for 2nd gens. So I decided to try a few more things. Tried to hot wire the pump from the battery and it worked. I then swapped the parking light relay for the fuel heater relay which was hot to the touch. It started pumping when I started tapping on it. Got it started and got myself home. So thanks a ton for the advice guys. Now its time to look for an aftermarket. I still have 15000 left on warranty, but I don't like the idea of the in-tank pump for the same reasons as others. And I don't know if the dealer will blame the bullydog even though I had been running it in stock for 2 weeks. What kits are good replacements without running return lines to the tank and such?
Thanks again guys.

Dave

If you are sure you do not want to run a return line ( just a note with a regulator you can splice into the regular return line and do a GPD 392). Without doing this the cheapest is a procomp blue ebay about 50 bucks next is a holley blue. You can purchase and adapter from DTR Lary to replace your stock pump and I sugest getting the fleet guard strainer #FF5079 from lary and place the strainer between the pump and tank. Most have recommended using the stock wire that went to the old pump directed to a relay for the new pump.

good luck

Just an update... I got my pump, filter mount style. Strangely enough, a company 30 miles from where I broke down can get the filter mount style all day long. Time was my deciding factor and they got it for me in a day, bolt on and go. At least I can work this week. After hearing everyone elses experiences, I'll be going with the GDP kit next month. Providing this pump last that long. So thanks again for the input guys.

Dave.
