Cutting out and smoking

This is on a friend's 2000 3500. I drive this while towing a 3 car trailer. Last week after getting back from a 300 mile trip, I took off from a stop light and the truck seemed like it was running out of fuel. Seemed like the pedal was dead. It wouldn't go over 2,000 rpm. It cut out 3 or 4 time's. Then once I got going it seemed ok. Shut it off while I unloaded car's, got back in, and all was well. He drove it several time's during the week, and said everything was fine. Then yesterday, I went about 200 mile's and it started cutting out again. I thought I would try some Power Service in it. Seemed better until later. It wouldn't hardly run. I pulled over and drained the filter canister. It was better, but would have sudden fit's. I got close to home and it was cutting out really bad, and smoking really bad. It slowed to 30mph. This was the first time I actually seen the smoke, but the guy behind me said he could tell when it was running bad, because everytime the truck would slow down, the smoke would pour out. At first I was thinking fuel delivery, but after seeing the smoke, I'm thinking maybe a bad injector. I had to park the truck at a truck stop. I'm going to try changing the filter today, and check the oil for fuel. I know nothing about diesel's. What's it sound like to you guy's. Thank's. Oh ya. How do you check for code's on a 2000.

on the 94 through 97 models you can cycle the ignition 3 times to get codes. I think on 98 and later models you need a scanner tool or just go by a autoparts store and they will pull codes for you most of the time free of charge.

I'm betting all in that you will be having a VP44 installed.

i would say $1500 being the highest but some of the 24 valve gurus may know some place else alot cheaper.

Forgive my diesel dumbness, but are we talking injection pump, lift pump, or what. Does it have both on a 2000. Like I said, I know nothing about diesel's. Is this something I could change, or better off at a shop. Would a FASS be an option. Guess it's time to educate myself about diesel's.

yes it has both an IP and LP changing the IP is quite a job if you don't know much about it. The LP is not that difficult the 24 valves have electric LPs. The 12 valves have mechanical LPs. As far as the FASS you don't need one, right now you don't have enough horse power for it tobe any use. You only need those for high horsepower engines. ps theres no dumb questions here.

Ok, here's an update. Remember,,,,this is not my truck. Both the fuel and air filter's were so dirty, they were colapsed. Don't know if that really has anything to do with it or not, but it's running fine at the moment. It did basically the same thing last week, so I'm not calling it cured.

I had the code's pulled. They are:

217
602
215
380
382
216

Bad thing is I can't read the guy's writing to see what they say. My friend called the dealer and during the conversation it was made know that he has a superchip's programer on the truck. The dealer said all code's mean nothing now. Set it back to stock, drive it, and see what happen's. So that's what we're going to do. Any other suggetion's about the code's. Thank's

0217-Coolant Temperature Too High
0602-Control Module Programming Error/NotProgrammed
0215-Couldn't find
0380-Couldn't find
0382-Couldn't find
0216-Dead expensive VP44 injection pump

There is a lift pump and an injection pump on the 2000's. The lift pump is the low pressure pump and supplys fuel to the VP44 injection pump. The vp44 injection pump is the high pressure fuel pump and sends fuel to the injectors and controls timing among other things. The symptoms that you are describing are classic dead injection pump problems.

Would the truck run if the pump was dead. I followed him back to the shop. He was doing 80 mph pulling a 7,000# trailer. Seemed like it was running really well. You guy's think the code's could be false because of the superchip's. That's what the dealer said.

It's possible. The other codes were for a fuel injection pump speed/position sensor signal lost.. and two were for the grid heater circuits. Not sure how the Super Chip affects things so it is wise to try it stock....but I would bet the pump electronics are going.....going.........
