Cummins loss of power

My 12v 1996 cummins seems to have no power when you floor the pedal, it drives normal until you really get into it, then its almost like it has a rev limit at 2000 rpm or a governor....it just falls flat on its face? Could this be a fuel problem or something??? Its my first cummins so I am going through the learning stages with these engines! It's an old beater with 246K, but I love the thing already.

Thanks
Rod

I think the first thing I'd try is the fuel filter. Good luck.

they have the most power between say 1700-1900rpm.

It's not breaking up and blowing blue/grey smoke at 2000 is it?

fuel filter, well it was on mine. 1,2,3,4 gears were fine but when i would get on it in 5th and hold it to the floor it would sputter and pop, pyro would stay at 900 and i could watch the boost fluctuate from 25 to 30 to 25 and never gain speed.

I will try the fuel filter then, when I bought the truck it had been sitting a bit with a full tank of fuel. It does not seem to smoke all that much, but I will double check. Thanks for the input!

Might be worthwhile to check the air filter also.

Filters are a good place to start, since you need to replace them anyway.

You also have a filter screen on the bottom of the lift pump. If the suggested filter changes do nothing, with the high mileage you have, that screen can be plugged. Cummins has a rebuild kit, cheap, and the bottom of the lift pump is easy to get to.

I guess I can also look into the screen at the bottom of the lift pump, is there any danger involved in taking this apart?

Thnaks again!

no, a little messy though. It's actually not at the bottom of the lift pump, it's the bottom of the fuel heater.

simple 10 min job. i dont think it's your trouble.

as stated, start with the filters.

If that doesn't do it.

check throttle linkage for full travel.

check shutoff solenoid for full travel.

It's possible your catalitic converter is restricted with that mileage.

how's your fuel pressure?LP?

replace your overflow valve.

timing?

Since I just got the truck I am looking to hookup a fuel pressure gauge. Where is the best place to put it and what parts would I need? Where is the overflow valve? Where do you suggest I buy these parts from if needed? I will most likely be getting a new exhaust system anyway since half the pipe is missing anyway.

thanks again!

The overflow valve is a 10 min job, it's about $40.00 located at the passengers side front of injection pump.

Do a search on "Marty Tompkins".

Get the pre-screen from fleetgaurd. $8.00

Send a PM to infidel, he's the fuel pressure install expert and he has pictures.
