Crankshaft position sensor
Crankshaft position sensor
I have just recently replaced my injection pump, lift pump and fuel filter. Certainly fixed my previous problems. Yesterday the check engine light comes on! What the hell? The code is
P0336 - Crankshaft position sensor A circuit range or performance problem.
At this point I have not noted any driveability problems. I will certainly adress the problem, but my question relates to how major an input is the CKP sensor.
Should I park it untill the problem is resolved, am I risking engine shutdown if the sensor totally craps out. Will the engine limp home without this input?
Thanks for any input.
Cheers

The CPS controls several engine functions as it informs the rest of the computer-controled systems that the engine is running.
It can affect the charging, and fuel control systems.

Best to get it fixed ASAP. It's a $40-$60 part depending on your realtionship with your parts supplier. It is located in the block behind the starter. Depending on your location it will take either 20 minutes and no sweat or more like a few hours and a lot of sweat and beer! I've heard of some just pulling out and others are seized in place from corrosion.
The reason I say to get it out soon is because it communicates to the ECM which in turn communicates with the VP44 bases on what the CKP reports. When I had my codes pulled the CKP was the first, but the following codes gave me a scare as they pointed directly to the VP44 and ECM. I can't imagine that bad info from the ECM to the VP44 will not create problems down the road. Luckily for me after replacing the CKP and clearing the codes the others did not come back.
