Cooling Fan Loose....

The cooling fan on my 99 CTD is loose. TIs rattlling around while the engine is running and I'm scared its gonna break off and take out the radiator.
It isn't the actual fan thats loose, its the bearing or whatever that is inside.
WHat i'm wondering is whether its and easy fix or a dealer job.
THanks
Josh

You must have had a lot of noise if it went bad. Mine went bad, made a lot of grumbling. The bearing is about $70 from Cummins. Not too hard to change. I would get it fixed or fix it soon.

It's a relative easy job. Just remove the fan belt, and then the four bolts holding on the entire fan assembly. I THINK they are 10mm. Remove the 3 bolts you can get to easily, and you'll need an open end wrench to remove the other bolt. (I think it's the bolt on the upper drivers side). The bolt won't be able to come out of the assembly, so you'll be stuck giving it 1/4 turns untill the bolt is out of the block, and then the assembly can come out.

Once you get the assembly out, you'll be able to see what needs replaced.

Hope this helps.

Give Cummins your engine serial number and tell them to do their job, look it up. They stock the bearing.

I'll give you my serial number from my motor.

It's Serial # 56450636

It shouldn't matter one little bit if it' from your motor, my motor, or some motor in Hawai. It's a fan assembly bearing.

Hepo this helps.

Ok thanks a bunch.
I got them my serial number in the meantime and ordered it. However, it was $105 from my cummins dealer, and $130 from the dodge dealer, and the cummins dealer will have it tomrrow, whereas the dodge dealer would be mon or tuesday

Merrick I agree totally but the first thing out of Cummins mouth is what is the engine serial number. They won't even look it up without it. Stupid general parts they want it. The number also goes into the computer so that in the future they have it.
