converter locking and unlocking

I've come here to pick the brains of the audience. Ive got a 99 3500 ram dually with a ATS valve body and convertor. Both are about a year old. After installing them I ended up with a constant locking and unlocking of my convertor. Note: never had this problem prior to installing these parts. If I get into the throttle hard and run it up to speed it works preety good. I contacted ATS and They had some patch that you could re route the wiring from the APPS sensor to the Body computer I did this but it did the same thing. I lived with it for awhile untill I was trailering down the road and my throttle went dead Check engine light came on and throttle came back. I put a new APPS sensor but this still didnt fix my trans problem. I really would like to get this fixed before it ruins my trans. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

Lot of folks have noticed this problem started when their batteries were nearing the end of their life.

Check both batteries, and if one or more is bad, replace both.

Not sure if ATS's "patch" is the same as DTT's noise filter, you might try that.

There's about 7 or 8 different inputs to a '99 trans to tell the convertor to either lock or unlock.Brake pedal, cruise control,speed.etc. Any one of these sensors, switches could be the culprit or it could be simply noise.I had my '99 reflashed by the dealer and it cured my BAD TC lock/unlocck problem.

I had the same problem and found out it was the alternator brushes being wornout. I replaced them and it increased the charging voltage and battery voltage. My problem started when I replaced the blower fan (on all the time) and the new one draws alot more voltage than the old one. I also was using a DeWalt battery charger and that causes alot of "noise" in the system.

No problems since I replaced the brushes.

....I would get the codes scanned. Not only might you have an RFI prob (lock/unlock), but the above situation sounds like a P0216 scenario.

This is what mine did when I had a bad Edge EZ chip, but yor sig does not say if you even have one. (just figured if you have the trans upgrade you might have a chip) but when the check engine light was on it said it was a bad MAPP sensor. just my .02$ good luck

I have not seen your sig but the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is the only sensor to control the trans shifting into and out of overdrive. Most do not throw a code before failure. You may take them apart and clean them but it apparently only buys a little time.

I had a brake pedal switch kicking my '94 in and out of lockup....stepping on brakes takes the torque converter out of lockup but i think leaves trans in overdrive. You might also try putting a voltmeter on the o/d and lockup wires (run some jumper wires into cab where you can see the meter) to see what's going on at the transmission... could be an intermittent short in wiring, or bad connector.
