Clutch Problem

A friend and myself changed a clutch in a CTD 2000 5 speed 2500 4X4 last weekend. Job was uneventful. We had the flywheel resurfaced and used a Luk clutch and pressure plate. New bearings were also used. It was apparent the old clutch had been slipping. Hot spots on the flywheel. Anyway the orignal complaint was the clutch started slipping at around 2100rpm in 5th gear. Now the owner says the same thing is happening again, after only 3 days. The rear main seal was not leaking and neither was the tranny around the input shaft. So oil on the clutch is not the problelm. What in the heck could be going on here. Is it the new clutch or maybe something else? We drove the truck and the clutch was fine although the front end drift was horrible. I could barely keep it in my lane at 60 mph. Anyway we detected no clutch slippage at all. We have not driven it again since the complaint but will tomorrow night. Can anyone think of something that may mimick clucth slip at that rpm and speed? Tranny coming apart, rear end failing, something? Clutch adjustment maybe. If so how do you adjust a hydraulic clutch? Help! Also this truck needs a new oil pan gasket, the book calls for 8 hrs labor, that tells me it is a hard job. Anyone changed one on a 4x4 2000?

For the oil pan the engine has to be lifted about four inches. You can figure from there.

Riding the Clutch?

Just a small amount of pressure on the clutch will apply several hundred pounds of release pressure on the clutch, and at 2,100RPM the truck is really putting out some power.

Make sure he isn't riding the clutch, give teh clutch a few days to break in.

Are you positive he isn't running any "power adders" ?

Ok, I am no expert here. But, If he was to get out there and really dog that truck right after the install, it is possible it slipped and glazed over the flywheel.

I understand that you have to be easy on a new clutch untill it is broken in.

like I said. I am probly wrong, but I was just throwing that out there.

Ok the guy returned the truck and my partner went for a ride in it. He said it is definitely not the clutch. He said the truck wants to fall on its face at 2100 rpm. He does not have a lot of diesel experience but he said it seemed like a fuel problem. The owner admitted he has not changed the fuel filter in 2 years. The engine has 76,000 miles on it. He has never used a fuel additive for lubrication either. He is going to change the filter tomorrow and see if that helps. If not how do you check fuel pressure? Could the lift pump be going bad? What other kinds of issues could mimick the kind of hesitation at that rpm? Thanks.

He outa be horse whipped!

kidding

There are 2 test ports in the fuel system. One is on the inlet line @ the Fuel Filter. The other is at the inlet of the VP44. The ports are shrader valves, and the best one to measure from is the VP44 inlet. There are some advertisers here that sell FuelPressure test setups.
