clutch install help

we just got our clutch In today and now we have a huge problem!!!

It stutters, slips and only feels like it is pulling out on the last 1/4 of the clutch throw! We even pulled the clutch master-slave out of another truck that had it replaced only 6 months ago. What did we do wrong???

It is a 500HP south bend. On a 98 12 valve

Please help we need this truck up soon for work

Chris

The shudder is from the clutch not being seated to the flywheel & pressure plate. The instructions that came w/ my con-o said to give it 200 miles of stop and go driving, then it'll be seated in. Are you sure it's slipping? did you guys resurface the flywheel?

we didn't resurface it, it looked good so we just left it. I am pretty sure it is slipping, when you stomp on it, the rpms bounce of the rev limiter but the speed stays the same you can really hear it slipping

Definently should have resurfaced the flywheel. A new clutch will hate any dirt, oil, or scuffs on the old flywheel. Did u guys clean the pressure plate with brake cleaner or silimar? A tiny chance it could be a manufacturer error with the pressure plate, but I doubt it from southbend. Did u make sure u didn't warp the pressure plate when u tightened it down?

ok, we will jerk it all apart tomorow and clean things up. I know it needs the flywheel resurfaced but now it can't be. I will rough it up as best I can with a sanding disk on a die grinder and see if that helps

Boy, I was really hoping that one of you guys weere just going to tell me all it needed was to jump on one foot, do 3 circles and spit on the ground to make it work!Oh well guess it is time to get dirty again

if ur gonna go through the trouble of taking everything back apart, why won't you take the 8 bolts off the flywheel and spend $40 on a resurface job? It would be worth it after buying a brand new clutch.

Mostly because it is Sunday and we cant get it done.

We now have another issue though. We can't get enough movement on the throw out bearing to release the clutch. It will move if you stop it and put it in gear but wont go into gear when it is running. What could this be now.

I noticed that when I pulled the slave out of another truck it has alot less play between the bearing and the fingers. There is about 1/2 inch more play on the truck we are working on than the one that works. It is like the bearing is sittlng in there so far it wont disengage!!

ANy ideas now??

that makes me think it's the master/slave. Might wanna just get a new one from southbend. Or try to pump all the air out of the old one, otherwise it might have a leak so it won't allow it to fully extend.

My SB came with a new flywheel. Nevertheless, should have resurfaced it, I mean why take the risk?
