check gauges light on........voltmeter reading zero
well u know its not a good day when u have to post in the "HELP" forum twice :.
anyhow, today i changed the oil and fuel filter, everything seemed to be running fine for the first 5 minutes. then the check gauges light came on and the voltmeter read zero. i turned around and went home, check the battery terminals just in case and fired it back up..........5 mins later, same thing. tried it one more time and it seemed to be ok but the voltmeter seemed a bit low at 10 or 11.
could this be from all the times i bumped the starter to run the lift pump to prime the system? i dont see how this would make any difference but i did have to crack an injector line to get it to prime.
any help would really be appreciated cuz i dont wanna drive anywhere if its goin to hurt it but otherwise im kinda stranded
thanks
jeff

I'd look at the connectors and cables at the back of the alternator. Maybe you have disturbed one of them when changing the oil filter.

Any chance you "sparked" when changing the oil? I have seen and experienced contacting the back of the alt with an oil filter wrench when changing oil and popping the maxi fuse in the pdc. Something to look at anyways.

er ummm, yep, that is what i did : >. had a bit more trouble getting the oil filter off than usual and i guess got a little carried away with the wrench. sparked against the alternator and i think luckily only took out the fuse.
however, i seem to be having a problem find a 140 amp fuse anywhere. ive tried NAPA, autozone, advance auto, pepboys, etc. with no luck
does anyone else have any ideas on where to get one? (other than the dealer, they arent open on sunday >)
thanks u guys for all your help

I found mine at autozone, had to ask as they were not out on the floor,I am in Oklahoma ,so do not know if every autozone carries them,I also was able to pick up a couple of spares for all the other size fuses under the hood. Might try them once more,Goodluck Rick

Re:check gauges light on........voltmeter reading zero
If the 120 fits and isn't too expensive I would go with that until I would get a replacement 140.. I tend to think the 120 would carry the load most of the time .. I don't know how often the system runs at maximum 140 amps... just a thought

Re:check gauges light on........voltmeter reading zero
The 120A may not last too long, especially in a cold climate. The preheaters can draw 120A each after the engine starts.
Wouldn't last a day up here in the north. ;D
