Black smoke at start up?

Allright so my truck runs fine never missed a beat before. Ive got an intake and an exhaust and for as long as i have ever owned it it has threw out a puff of black smoke on start up. I never thought anything of it before but i have read a few threads on how that puff of black smoke could be a sighn of my vp going bad. Is this true or what? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx guys

Don't worry about the "puff of black". Its normal and nothing to worry about. Mine does it and so do lots of others. Are you throwing any codes? Using oil? Lots of older diesel inline motors have that puff at startup, even my dad's 05 1 ton, my dad has a couple of Yanmar, 3 cylinder diesels and there is a puff EVERY time those motors start too. Just make sure you got gauges (fuel pressure is the most important) and go and have fun!!!
