Big Trouble

While riding down the road last night, I passed a vehicle & my truck made this loud noise like I blew a turbo hose off. It just quit running, & I coasted to the side of the road. It sounds like when you try to start it, that it either has no compression, or the engine is not turning, I further removed the oil cap & had someone turn the key while I looked at the rockers. There was NO movement on top of the head at all. The harmonic balancer didn't attempt to turn. I have concluded that I have a blown up fly wheel or input shaft or similiar. Does anyone have any ideas.
thanks, stranded in Hot ATLANTA!! BIGHEAD

Could it just be a starter problem? Since you said flywheel, I assume it is a manual trans. I suppose the clutch could have grenaded and somehow took out the ring gear so the starter can't catch it. Is there an inspection plate on the bellhousing on the manuals?

It is an auto with SUNCOAST TC, I wouldn't think the starter would make a loud boom, & then kill the motor & all power.

If the flex plate breaks completely it could. But there will probably be some other damage. First thing I would do is put a wrench on the front and see if the motor turns over at all. Then remove the dust cover to access the TC bolts and see if things look ok and try to turn the flywheel. This should tell you which has to be removed for repair.

HEMI CAT, I have already had the truck towed to GA to Jeff Garmon, woh is well known for diesel knowledge. I wish I were where I could try what you suggested, but I can't. TOO FAR !! I did try removing the dust cover bolts from under the TC. I could get 2 of them, but not the third one. It did appear that there was metal fragments trying to stick through the crack around that cover. I guess if the motor broke, cummins can fix it, just installed 6 months ago. I guess if the TC has fell apart, SUNCOAST will take care of it. I guess everything else is on me. Thanks for your input.

If what I've heard is true, you won't go wrong with Jeff. I've heard several say that he'll fix what needs to be fixed and will do it right but won't take you for a ride by fixing things that don't need to be fixed. He was the first one that I thought of when I saw where you were broke down.

Good luck and keep us posted,

Hey, BIGHEAD, it's been several days since the last post on this thread. The suspense is killing me! What did they find your problem to be?
