Axle removal on my 91 ????
My rear seals are leaking badly. I presume the bearings are worn. How do you get the axle out???? I would like to get the bearing numbers before I do the complete tear-down. Local parts people show a bunch of different bearing and seal sizes. Stamped on the outside of the axle flange are the following numbers 091 29 PD and -46 M15 MW Could these numbers help in sizing the bearings. I know I have a Dana 70 but don't know if the brake shoes are 2 and 1/2 inch or three inch.
I have removed the 11/16 nuts from the hub but can't get the axle to budge. Am I missing something? I drove it around a bit with the nuts backed off and could not get things to loosen up.

If memory serves correctly, you have to remove the locks in the differential and the large nut at the end of the axle (needs a special socket of a chisel and care.) That may be a seniors' moment.

The axles should just pull out of there once you remove the axle flange bolts/nuts from the hub. Not sure about the numbers on the axle. It seems the best way to get the right parts is to do a tear down first. I had to take my axle seal to Napa to ensure I had the right one of the two they said are listed for that year model diff. You will need a 2 9/16 socket to pull the hub nut off, the nut is 'locked' in place with an expensive little lock wedge in the keyway of the axle tube. If you haven't lately, drop your cover and change your diff fluid, many people don't, and you'd be surprised how much sludge and crud might be in there. My brakes were 3", book at Napa listed both 2 1/2 and 3, you need to look and measure. Try giving your axle a couple of raps with a dead blow hammer, or a piece of wood and a ball peen, it should loosen up and slide out of there. If you still are having probs, PM me and I can come out and have a look.

Thanks... Your reply helped. I am by Calahoo frequently as my brother and I get meat scraps from the plant there. I'll keep you posted. Gotta run.

My 1-ton had 2.5 inch shoes. So there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it. Once I removed the bolts on the axle flange, the axle pulled right out, maybe with a few taps from a hammer. But it was definitely not a big deal.

Posted in 1st gen as well, the only thing holding the shafts in are the outer nuts. To break them free, the book says to hit the center of the flange with a heavy hammer/maul. This didn't work when I did mine. I hit down on the edge and the popped free. Then slide them out. If any body has a rear lock up, you can do this to get it home without needing a flatbed.

Ahhh Got the right parts today. Woman at Napa can't figure out how their guy got the parts wrong. Of course the right parts were $5 more. They went in beautifully. Even the park brake is sweet. Thanks to all of the advice I got from you guys I am really confident that this fix will last.
Thanks again
