anyone have black smoke and loss of power
truck just started it. seems to rev higher at a stop and no real power, seems like its gurggling or bogging down during acceleration. boost seems weak and theres lots of black greyish smoke from the tailpipe. Oh yea recently did a brake job on front but don't think that's got anything to do with it.
Any help would be appreciated

from the symptoms you describe i would be willing to bet that you have a leak between the turbo and intake. if it isnt noticable to the naked eye try spraying soapy water around all the connections.
gonna try the soap now.
Would a clogged fuel filter cause black smoke? It's less than 2 yrs old
Oh yea i can't believe i forgot to mention it. She was run outa fuel the day b4 and had to crack 2 injectors to get her to start could that be anything to do with it?
Thanks like i said i got job 400 miles away in 11 days and would like to try n figure this out cause i can't go like this.

Like the other guys said, check for boost leaks. But also check the air filter, this really sounds like an air restriction.
After you check that stuff it wouldn't be a waste to change the fuel filter.

well i checked for air leaks as best i could and everything seems o.k. Just got a fuel filter from autozone their brand. only thing nearby. puttin it on now.
On a whim i also jacked up both tires and gave the tires a whirl. passanger side spins pretty freely (2+ rotations) now on the drivers side different story. Whith the same force it only makes it about 3/4 of a rotation. So maybe a binding caliper or warped rotor is binding that tire and robbing power!? any thoughts.
I'm gonna do fuel filter anyway its probably due, but i gotta get into the breaks

replaced a binding caliper, looked for vaccun leaks, changed fuel filter, checked tps, but still have the same black smoke and loss of power.
I get a puff of black smoke on start up. but runs strong. put in in drive and she starts chuggin' like she mike die. put it in nuetral runs fine.
when in drive It seems like i'm starting out in 2nd gear from a stop(no power at take off black smoke)
I can start off by placing the gear selector on the 1 and i get decent power and acceleration and not much smoke. do it while it is placed on D and i get booged down and smoke screen everyone around.
Could a t.v cable adjustment be the culprit? the tolerances i have compared to the sticky is out and i'm gonna adjust it tomorrow. I just don't know where else to look. the air filter is fine. less than 2500 miles since it was changed.
at 60 she purrs right along but if i wanna accelerate i smoke the entire interstate.
could tranny or something that controls the shifting be the culprit?
any help would be appreciated my time clock is ticking

so i pulled the afc cap off and tried to pull out the rubber seal and cone thingy and i couldn't get it out so i pressed it down a few times and then it popped up. it does seem kinda gummy in there, like old grease or something. i cleaned it up and now am wondering is it self lubed or does it need to be greased?
On the other note; I have a 1992 intercooled auto with o.d. so i wanna say i do have the lock up but not sure how to tell. If cleaned up afc doesn't cure my power/smoke problem an idea how i check for lock up malfunction?
thanks

i would look definitly for a boost leak if the afc inst the case. pull the air filter off and look in the tube for any debris or anything maybe there is something blocking your intercooler or something. check your boots for cracks. and leaks check the gasket on top of the motor where the intercooler tubes connect to the motor ie the intake.
Just to clarify when i opened the AFC the valve was stuck closed only by pressing it in a few time did i get it to release.
After further inspection of the afc i realized i have the what appears to be the bullydog fuel pin not the stock "cone" type.
On the ramp portion i noticed a vertical running scar which i honed down and polished. I got it back together and it seems to be better but not as it was.

i probably had to grind and polish the ramp down a 1/2 - 1 millimeter or so to get the scar out.
Is there some kinda compensation i needa do because of the altered thickness of the slope?
Got sum power back. but still smokes quite abit when you really get on the throttle both from a stop and at any speed. really smokes a wot.
rattles and shakes and chugs in gear at a stop.
runs smooth cruise at a constant speed
I checked for turbo leaks and can't find any. i checked from the air box to the grid heater and i got nothing. so i think it may be the afc cause it was stuck, had the scar, then removed the scar, but it helped unsticking it.
Any screws on the pump i might consider turning to compensate for the this. li
oh yea just another tidbit i can feel the turbo lag like it s taking a second to kick in, but it's not bogging down as muck as it was.
Thanks again. sorry for all the description, I really appreciate the input

Does that year truck have a particulate filter or converter in the exhaust? The reason I ask is that my '01 does the exact same thing if the exhaust brake sticks closed. Lots a smoke and no power and high exhaust temps. Check the exhaust because I know from experience a restricted exhaust ('tater in the tail pipe, baffle in muffler come loose) will cause what you are describing. I would also check all the fuel filters. I work on an International dump truck that will do what you are describing and it is the fuel filter clogged. First time it happened we took it to local diesel shop thinking IP problems due to excessive smoke and no power, but turned out to be an expensive filter after they got through. Second time it happened we changed secondary and cleaned pre-filter screen and saved about $200.
