anyone have black smoke and loss of power

How ironic...my truck just started puffing black smoke this past weekend. There's hardly any smoke at start-up but there's quite a lot as the engine gets up to temp... so much so, folks around me are giving me the "omg what's wrong with your truck" look. An old timer at a local fair had the nerve to run up & tap on my window and tell me, "your pretty trucks burn'n oil" lol Haven't noticed any loss of power issues & am thinking the filter wouldn't cause black smoke since plugged/restricted filters in the past usually just stall the truck. The old timer's comments have me concerned this could be something major I know gasoline engines with bad rings will produce white-ish blue smoke but do worn rings on a diesel produce the same blue-ish white smoke or is it just black??? Can a bad injector cause black smoke issues?

Wildbill, black smoke is unburned fuel, and yea, a bad Injector could do it real quick.
That being said, I would bet you would have black smoke all the time, not just when she warms up. I would almost bet you have a sensor somewhere in that 03 that is giving the ECM flaky info.
Sorry I can't be more help, I'm stuck in the 60's.....

For peace of mind I decided to throw in a spare oem fuel filter I had sitting around but no luck w/the black smoke as expected. I have noticed white smoke present after a cold start & at idle... but once I step on the throttle & drive the truck normally, I get quite a lot of black smoke! So far I haven't had any loss of power or odd engine sounds. I double checked the new air filter & turbo blades & they look fine. I'm wondering if I should stop driving the truck with it smoking like this before causing worse damage?

jeez -
i feel your confusion
She smokes at all temps.
My 92 gets an 18" puff of black smoke at start up
runs fine in nuetral and no smoke to speak of; in gear it feels like its gonna die at a stop
once it gets to speed and you hold it there she purrs right along no smoke
get on the throttle {from stop pr moving} heavy and it lags 4 a sec. then takes off and smokes out everyone.
my afc was stuck but now free, the turbo is spooling i can build 24psi(what i always have been able to do)
I cracked all injectors to listen for engine tone difference, and all seem to fire.
coud twisting the pump on way or another solve this??????
could it be as simple as turning the smoke screww?????
What caused this to happen outta the blue???????
what keeps the fuel from not burning if the turbo is spooling, a bad ring, fouled injector?????
too many ??????
I just don't get it
Maybe about time to take'er in

When you pulled the AFC cone out to look at it, did you see if the little pin that rides on the fuel pin moves freely? Pull it out again and pull the throttle lever, see if the pin pops out and you can push it back in easily once you let go of the throttle lever. It may have stuck down again.
That's really the only thing I can think of that would make the truck start smoking suddenly.

so the afc is continuing to get stuck down, gotta give the plunger a 1/4 turn and it pops back up.
but when i look into the afc shaft i don't see a pin sliding in and out when i operate the throttle
i see a pin but it stays even with the shaft wall. seems to be stuck and "maybe" masshed on the end; I can't reall get a good look at it.
Any ideas?
thanks
