Almost running....

91 CTD:

Replaced the lift pump
Replaced the fuel lines from the tank to the LP and the return.
Bled the feed line
Bled the injectors.
Cranking now get black/dark gray smoke.
Still won't quite start.

Questions:

1. When I bleed the injectors should I expect to see a dribble of fuel or a spurt?
2. What's it take to replace the bushing on the throttle linkage shaft to stop the fuel dribble?

Thanks

stu...

when you say thats it "still wont quite start"
what do you mean?
does it crank fine?
are you getting fuel through the bleed hole?

Lots of fuel in the bleed screw. Cranks great. Nice puffs of dark gray/black smoke from the tail pipe. Even some really cool smoke rings.

I need to fix that leak on the throttle shaft, any ideas?

I thought that someone gave instructions for the bushing replacement in another thread? Perhaps it was not you. As I remember, you take the top off the pump and replace the bushing...try a search in the 1stGen.

It idles!

It took forever to bleed the injectors, but it is finally idling. Of course, it idles like a Tijuana bus. Now it won't go past idle. As soon as I touch the throttle, it dies. I'm leaving it idling in case there is still some residual air in the lines. Any ideas on how long it should take for the idle to settle down?

YEAH! The air should pure fairly quickly unless one of the lines is sucking air (especially any rubber lines. No doubt you have fresh diesel? Did you look at the link for the bushing?

I checked the link for the bushing. That'll get fixed this week, assuming the thing keeps running.

I adjusted the screw under the 8mm allen cap (idle speed adjuster?) and it's all good now. Looks like I gotta pull the LP again, got an oil leak from under it, but that's a slam dunk.
