AC clutch

My AC quit working today with no warning. I went to a local AC shop and was told that it was a bad clutch on the compressor. Shop owner said the 06 & 07 were bad about going out. Got a quote of $550 to replace the clutch or $950 to replace with a new compressor.

I'm thing about getting a couple more quotes.

If the clutch coil failed in a manner to get hot (meltdown....common) I would go with the compressor. The front seal doesn't like to get that hot.

That clutch price seems a bit high, even including labor. I just looked it up on Advance Auto Parts' web site and see that while they do not seem to carry just the clutch, the entire compressor, with 2 year warranty, is only 437.98, if you have an HS18 compressor. Do you know what compressor you have?

Get a second opinion could be as simple as low freon or a switch if it is the coil like stated make sure it didn't cook the seal

I got a second opioion from another ac repair shop and they said it is the compressor. They checked all of the sensors and switches and there price was $800 for replacement of the compressor with a one year warranty.

I ran into this last year when mine failed........You can buy a comp w/clutch, a comp w/o clutch, but not just the clutch. Made no sense to me. Only available from Chrysler........
