ABS / Brake warning light

Suddenly on my 99 dodge diesel the abs and brake lights came on.

Any ideas? A regular garage could not help and said that the codes that came up on the analyzer require a dealer to check it out.

The code that came up is P 1693, in a companion module.

I am wondering where I should go from here. Dealer? Possible causes? Cost estimate?

Thanks,

Duffy

Go to Dodge dealer parts department and pick up the speed sensor that bolts up to the rear differential. Either yours has come unhooked or has taken a dive. It takes a whole 10 minutes to change it out. Heck before you drive to the dealer, crawl underneath and check it out. It might just need unplugging and cleaning. Put a little di-electric grease in the socket, reconnect the wires and see if it comes back to life....

Good Luck!!

I replaced the one mentioned above and it made no difference. Went to the dealer and had the codes read and it turns out the RF sensor is failed open. Supposedly, you gotta replace the front wheel bearing set up to replace the sensor.

yeah that usually means you front wheel bearings are getting hot and getting ready to shell on you. I would check both front hubs and see if one needs replaced. If one does just go ahead and get read for a major PITA I had to change the ones on my 01 v-10 about 5 thousand miles apart and both of them I had to have the bearing cut out of the housing with a torch by the local welder. They were so frozen in the housing that we couldn't even attempt to move them with a sledge hammer. Like I said a real PITA

The other day fiance and I were driving to Edmonton and it was freakin cold out. I swear with the wind it had to be -50. While driving our ABS light came on and so did our BRAKE light. As soon as we got into the city and started driving slower they both went off. Obviously they don't like the cold.

Question ABS & brake lights on and rear wheel speed sensor replaced!

My 99 3/4 ton had the ABS and brake light come on while still under warranty and the dealership replaced the rear wheel speed sensor and the lights went off. Now a couple of years later they're on again and I replaced the rear wheel speed sensor over three months ago and they're still on. They'e not always on but when they are, sometimes the speedometer jumps around like crazy but not all the time. I see an RF sendor mentioned as a warning that the front wheel bearing are hot but sometimes mine comes on before I even start rolling in the morning. HELP!!!!!!
