Wink 98 ctd bucked, cut out for 1 day then died

my 98.5 24 v ctd was running fine then yesterday it started cutting out on hwy ,bucked and jerked then stalled ,i restarted it and drove a few more kms then it bucked and jerked again like it was running out of fuel then it died and wont restart ,i scanned it and got p0122 ,apps sensor code ,and p1693, i cleared the codes and tried to restart ,no dice ,i was stabbing the throttle when it started dieing so that may have set the apps sensor code.but can the injection pump fail with no codes? ,i think the lift pump bailed ,i can hear it run but that does not mean i have pressure ,anyway to tell without a fuel pressure gauge? ,any help would be greatly appreciated

98.5 24 v 4x4, superchip flashtuner,bd power 40 hp injectors,ats header,4'' afe pipe,edge ez stacked,pyrometer,afe stage 2 cold air intake

My truck did the same thing. Yes the injection pump will fail without codes. Fuel pressure also lies. A pressure gauge will measure fuel or air pressure. On my truck I had a pin hole in the fuel line in the sending unit. When the truck got to less than a half of a tank of fuel it would suck air and buck just like yours. My gauge said 16lbs all the time. apps code is a problem too, but the truck should at least start and idle without it. Sounds like you are going to spend some big bucks. Make sure you have fuel pressure and no air when you finally get it fixed. I ran clear hose to find my leak, then when it was repaired I put a clear glass fuel filter inline under the hood. You can get them at most parts stores, they have removable filter element. Now when I fuel up I open the hood and look at the filter to make sure there is no air.

If the filter houseing is full that sshould mean it's pumping fuel and not air. Try breaking the line at the VP, and see if you get fuel there with the lift pump running.

sorry ,are you talking about an injector line or the feed line to the vp,i know from changing fuel filters before ,i think the fuel came out alot more before, after i replaced the bleeder plug i tried to start and it turned over ,barked once then would not fire ,cycled key again and it did the same thing,it seems like the lift pump cant supply enough pressure to the vp,everyone says that the vp will pull the fuel but from ctd techs i have been told that it is not always the case ,the fact that i have no codes related to the vp is steering me away from that ,i have never had any inj timing or pump codes in system ,vp was replaced at 160000 km ,now i have 320000 km ,so it has some kms on it,since i cleared the codes none have reset ,although truck has not started except for a little bark here and there,i know it probably is the vp44,if i had a code relating to it i would not hesitate, help!i am driving my f150 and at the cost of fuel at 12 mpg a vp44 dont sound bad actually.

Do a "volume check". Bump the starter to get the lift pump to run for the 25 seconds and measure how much fuel it pumps. It must be more than 1.33 liters if not replace the lift pump. Yes you have to disconnect a line and stick a bit of hose on it.

Just put a pressure gauge on the shrader valve on the fuel line at the IP. that will atleast tell you what you have at Idle, Autozone should have one that you can borrow..

Just make sure you remember, FUEL PRESSURE LIES. The pump will pump air, fuel, water, oil, all at the proper pressure. If the fuel pressure is good check the volume, if the volume is 1.3 liters in 30 seconds, crack the fuel lines and see if you have fuel to the injectors. If you have good fuel with at least 8lbs of pressure and proper volume, then the only two items left are the computer or the vp44. If you have no codes then I would lean toward the vp44.

I love it. It does not smoke a lot, but makes unreal power and gives me gauges for cheap money.

ok ,now i checked volume of the lift pump .75 liters in 30 seconds ,so i replaced it with an airtex pump and replaced fuel filter, bled fuel filter, bled line to vp,cracked 1,3 and 4 injector lines ,cranked it over ,fuel came out of 3 and 4 ,ran on the ground ,closed those lines and still cranking to get #1 to bleed ,after closing the other 2 inj lines ,truck fired and died about 4 times now intermittently fires and dies ,still have not got more than a drip of fuel out of #1 inj line, any suggestions ?what do u think badme

I think try a bit more these thing can be a sob to get primed. What do you have for volume and pressure now?

I hate to steer you in a different direction with all the work you have done already but my truck had pretty close to the same problem and i tried the apps reset procedure first since that which code I recieved (the exact same codes you listed). The truck started fine afterwards and haven't had a problem in 80K mi. since. I would try it just for grins and it's free. Still sounds like you need to keep priming also like badme said also. Diesel should flow out of #1 Here is a link to the procedure
