98 24 vlv acting up

The truck that is in my sig is the one acting up. I'm getting white smoke and loss of power. its also "missing" really bad.

The story to what happened:
I have been running my truck for about a month without the map sensor plugged in on my edge comp. last night a friend let me try out his smarty on my truck. i downloaded it on level 8 because he said thats the highest setting without adding timing. i took it for a run and it woke it up a little bit. i told him i didnt have my map sensor plugged in so we did that. i pulled out and mashed on it and white smoke, and missing horrible. i undownloaded the smarty and left to go home. same thing, a little white smoke and missing like crazy. i unplugged my comp and still the same thing. no power at all, fastest i could get it was 50 mpg. i pulled over and unplugged the map sensor like i had it previously but still no change. So it started missing and running horrible as soon as i plugged in the map sensor with the smarty installed. The smarty is currently not on my truck. Any ideas at all??

Sorry for the long write up and sorry if this is confusing. Ill be back around 3 to check back on any ideas you guys have.

Eeek. Sounds like the pump is having a bad day. The VP44 may be on the way out with that type of smoke and misfire, that would indicate incorrect timing. That is a typical failure pattern IIRC..

What about a head gasket? Did you check the oil for coolant?

i dropped it off with my mechanic and it was something i didnt even think to look for. for my walboro pump theres that fuse/relay under the hood. well when i went to plug the map sensor back in i must have pulled one of the wires loose out of that relay and therefore the walboro pump wasnt functioning. he's going to test the FP on the injector pump and see if its ok.

Well, low feed pressure would do that, but the pump shouldn't act that poorly with low fuel pressure... Best of luck..

I have seen walbro failures where the VP white smokes and shuts off, this is with a brand new VP pump.

It seems that depending where the walbro stops, the VP has a tough time getting any fuel through it. I did not think this was possible, but it has happened on a couple trucks I work on, mine being one of them.

THese things happen, just food for thought. One of the " failures " was the same thing, bad wire at the relay.

Take 12 of the valves out and it will run much better.

Sorry man had to say it. Good luck hope it is not costly.

My mechanic said that the connector inside the relay wasnt even connected very good. He said the wire pulled out of the connector and appeared to be not crimped to the wire very well thus pulled out easily. so he soldered it up and its fixed the problem.

Another question:
I do not have a fuel pressure guage at the moment...i need one but money is tight...is there a way to test it even with the truck sitting still? Or would they have to hook up a gauge and drive it to read it properly? On his diagnostics reader he said nothing else popped up, so if my IP was getting weak would that have shown up?

You need to rest fp at idle and wot. You really need to drive it for that. wot in the driveway is a bit wild.
