butterfly vlv?

fairly new to this cummins diesel. it appears there is a butterfly valve on the exhaust side of the turbo. what is it used for? i know on my 97' PSD(previous trk) it was used as a warm up device.

thanks for any info on this

that would be an exhaust brake. and yes it does help warm the truck up faster especially in colder temps.

if it has a cylinder mounted vertically on top of the elbow portion of the exhaust its probably the jacobs exhaust brake

It's also used to help slow the truck down.

so this is a "stock" item from cummins/dodge? it doesn't look to be an aftermarket item. there is a rod connected to it and an actuator on the other. can't see what controls the actuator. the engine still has the stock turbo, but has the 5" mag. exhaust(previous owner install)

if it was an exhaust brake, shouldn't i hear the restriction of the exhaust when it closes? what controls it?

thanks

Correct me if I am wrong but almost positive there was not a "stock" brake avalible untill the 6.7L. That is not to say its not a dealer installed option, just not one avalible from the factory.

no switches on the shifter other than the tow haul / OD off switch. and no other switches mounted anywhere else in the truck.

this bothers me not knowing. thanks to all helping me better understand.

If you have an auto i dont think you could get an exhaust brake factory till the 6.7. 06 had to option of the jake brake and had a button on the shifter along with the badge "jake Brake" below the cummins emblem.
