97 auto transmission issue

Ok the trans is acting weird this is in my 12v ford superduty swap, on a cold start when I put it in gear R or D I have to rev it up before it will engage and take off . And the fluid level is good . And I put a converter switch on the blk/org wire and grounded the other side of the switch . It locks fine but switches straight to shifts up really quick to OD and will not unlock when I switch it back off . I have to shut the truck off to unlock it

Can't help you with the switch, but try this on the converter issue, try putting it in neutral for 5 seconds or so before you try and go to R or D. If after doing that, it pops right into gear, your converter is draining back, common if the check valve is bad. I wouldn't get too worried, many of then do it, takes just a few seconds in N at the beginning of the day.

^^ what Pat said I have a 90 DRW that did that for over a year I just put it in N for a few sec. not the norm. but it stopped on its own. as for the T/C lock up issue re check the wire/switch maybe a grounding problem

the not going when you put it in gear is a drainback problem- the tranny doesn't pump fluid in P, only the other positions (that's why N first). There is a one way valve in the cooling lines to prevent the TC from draining back to the pan- they can get stuck closed or can leak. Sound like you had a temp leak allowing drainback. Also happens when the valve body is incorrectly modified.
