5TH GEAR GOING?

I am new to the site, but have been reading a lot of the postings on common problems. I have a 00 2500 quad 4x4 5 speed, that I bought 3 months ago. It just developed a slight vibration at highway speeds, but stops when the accelerator is let off. I pulled the drive shaft and checked the ujoint which are fine. I have read several postings concerning problems with 5th gear going out. Supposedly there is problem with a nut for 5th gear coming off, could mine be starting to go?

Re:5TH GEAR GOING?

My 5th gear went the same way a few weeks ago - just crusing down the highway, then a shudder and &quot;pop&quot;, then 5th gear was like neutral. Thank goodness I have the extended warranty, so only paid the $50 deductible for the repair, which took about 3 hours on my '99.

Re:5TH GEAR GOING?

I've lost 5th gear twice. Never experienced vibration either time. Does your truck have a hanger bearing? That will give vibration.<br>John

Re:5TH GEAR GOING?

Yeah you may need a new carrier bearing or to have your drive shaft balanced. It could have slung a weight or if you have ever had it apart you could have gotten it out of phase. It could even be a problem such as backlashing in the rearend. Many things can lead to driveline vibrations and it's hard to diagnose without just trying one thing at a time.

Re:5TH GEAR GOING?

Thanks for the info guys, I think I might look to the rearend next. Since I don't have a hanger bearing, and it seems to be getting progressively worse.
