47re tranny problems

I have a 98 12 valve with a 47re. I don't think it ever shifted right since I bought it. But now it is very bad . If you put it in drive with or without the o/d off. As soon as you give it throttle the t/c will lock up and kill the engine. It also will not start out in 1st unless you put it in 1st. For a while it would not shift out of 1st at all even when you manually shift it. I want to put a built tranny in it, but really need to drve for a while first. I just replaced the two solenoids and nothing changed. I think I'll have to take it to the dealer unless someone can help me. I thought the two solenoids would fix it. But I don't want to throw away anymore money. Also every once in a while it will all work properly, but if you come to a complete stop, or shut it off it will start acting up again. I searched all the threads and didn't see anybody with a truck that locks up and dies off idle. Thank you.

It sounds like the seals on input shaft are leaking, causing lockup. Does it stall in reverse also?? Limpin will casue no downshift to 1st at stop. It does not sound well for prolonged use.

Sounds like you need to look for a wiring issue. Dodge pulls the solenoids to ground, so whatever would complete the ground would also cause lockup, look at the connector plug or wiring from the top of the tranny.

It does not lock up in reverse. All the gears are strong seperatly, they just don't work in order. I'll check all the wires. thanks.

hi
get a scaner and read the codes and then post them here .

sometimes just removing the codes will correct the problem , but it may return !

I don't believe unit can hydrauliclly lock up in low gear without some mechancial failure. My thought is input shaft seals, but VB could be also be cause. Try disconnecting the control wiring at tranny. This will help eliminate a external issue. In other words, by disconnecting the wiring and tranny still locks down in low gear, you have a internal tranny issue. Get the ideal. It won't go into lockup and OD in disconnected condition unless there is internal problem. If you take to dealer and especially a tranny shop, I can predict the diagnois.
