2001 cutting out around 2500 rpm

My 2001 is cutting out & sputtering around 2500 rpm usually in third gear.It also sometimes runs as if it is governed at 1000 rpm and blows white smoke & will eventually blow out & start running ok again. Both problems are intermitten sometimes it runs fine, the cutting out happens the most. Any ideas?

welcome to DTR. sounds like you should of found use sooner. turn the key to on (not start) then off then on and back off then onthen on, and then look at your odometer it will read the codes in your truck, It will look in you pcm and your ecm let it read bought. It sounds like you might find a p1693 and a p0216 and that won't be very good you IP is on it's way south . Go check it and get back to us.

it is your injection pump (vp44) it will have to be replaced all you can get is a rebiult for 1k if you put it on yourself, it's not as hard as it looks we have all the instructions you need. you will also need a new lift pump at around 200 to 600 depending which way you go you will need a fuel pressure gauge to monitor the new lift pump. when it fails it starves the ip and it burns up. do a search on vp44 and you will find all kinds of info that will be helpful to you. BTW if you take it to a dealer and your over the 5year 100k it will cost you ALOT MORE, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

and if the dealer gives you any crap about the pump not being the problem, tell them you talked to a 16 year old kid on the INTERNET last night and HE said that YOU need to replace YOUR vp!

Thank you for your time. You sure know your diesels, thanks. Looked at your pics, you haul hay a little different over there, pretty cool- cows are probably fat!
