2 piece driveshaft carrier support bearing?

hey folks...i was fiddleing around under my truck looking for any potential loose bolts or whatever

so at the poitn where the two pieces of the rear driveshaft meet they are supported from the frame but a "U" type of thing...inside this U thing is a boot or a rubbery type of thing which supports the driveshaft....well this boot of mine or casing is kinda torn, metal is showing and i get a certain amount of play within that "U"...

what is that? is that normal? and where do i find the rubber boot/casing so i can replace it?

it's called a "carrier bearing".

should be avalible at napa or whatever.

fairly straitforward to install.

careful, there are 2 different part # depending on your truck.

The rubber should be stiff enough that you can't move it much, it probably needs replaced.

Napa's price wasn't much different than the dealer's wholesale price when I bought mine. Napa would've had to order it in. I think I paid about $150CAN. And there are two different sizes.

There are technically 2 different sizes and it is confusing the way they list them but I have yet to see any 2500 or 3500 not use the larger hanger bearing assembly......for some reason, anything to do with the way Dodge driveshaft parts are listed seems to cause much confusion in the automotive aftermarket.

Most times if the carrier bearing or rubber needs replacing you will have a very obvious vibration under load or acceleration.

I wouldn't fix it if it ain't broken

not on a dodge, but i've seen these catch fire before! it made a hell of a racket before it caught fire. luckily there was nowhere for the driping, flaming rubber to go to.

i'd replace it, that's just me.

The ones I found for bout 30 bucks were only similar on size but all had the ears that bolted to the frame instead of the tapped housin like ours has, but in all other aspects they were the same, shaft size, load cap. ect.

Today however I did find them at republic diesel in lex or louisville ky for 56$ that so far has beat the closest price by 20-30$

I think you'll only need to remove the u-joint at the differential.
Make sure to mark it so it goes back on in the same position.

Bill i just went through my hayne's manual and they mention that one i slide the rear shaft out of the center bearing i need to take the fron shaft and bearing to a shop to have it pressed off and the new one pressed on...is that the case?...otherwise the install looks very straight forward
