The regular stuff I guess, air/fuel filters and fuel pressure from the lift pump. A weak lift pump can do that as well.

Also timing, that is more involved in getting checked, but that would be some places to look.

Get your injectors pop tested. How many miles on the injectors? Maybe time for a new or serviced set. Some smoke till warm is normal, but not allot. Kevin

The timing degrades on the first gens pretty easily over time. Both my 89 and 93 only had around 150,000Km so about 80,000 miles and the timing was way retarded on them. The 93 was the worst at only 1° BTDC... Stock timing is 10° at idle. Heavy blue-white smoke at startup and bluish smoke when cool.

Don't discount timing just because its a VE pump.....

Yup, I'd crank the pump timing ahead, first. It's free and most likely the problem, IMHO. My brand new pump smoked blue and missed when not warmed up....ran like crap, basically. Of course, I didn't time it the 'right' way. Shoulda known 'cause it was so quiet Cranked her ahead and all was/is well! It's worth a shot.

The VE pump mounting flange(s) are oval in shape. Once the bolts are loosened a bit, the pump can be rotated toward the block to advance the injection timing. I've had good luck with a huge prybar, gentle pressure and a steady whack with a big soft mallet. Do a search on pump timing in the first gen section and you'll get going in the right direction

Are you sure rotating it toward the block advances it? I thought is was the other way around on a 1st gen.....
