'04 cranks but wont start
'04 cranks but wont start
A friend of mine called me last night saying his truck would not start. He said lately it has been getting hard to start (long crank)but last night it would not fire at all.
It still has the lift pump on the side of the motor so I figured this might be the problem. I opened the bleed lever on the fuel filter housing and bumped the starter. The lift pump came on and it seemed to pump just fine. It was late and we did not try to crack an injector line yet to see if it was getting fuel to the injectors.
Does this sound like a CP3 problem or something else?
The only codes showing on the odometer were PO113 and PO237. These codes wouldnt be related to this problem I dont think. Arent they just "nuisance" codes(air intake sensor voltage low and map sensor voltage high)?
Any help appreciated.
thanks
Dave

Based on those code your field likely has a fueling box. if a pressure box it could have blown the rail presure relief valve or an injector. If an 04 could be an injector has died of natural causes if truck has over 130k. Has he checked the oil level to see if it increasing? Was it smoking at idle any before this issue? If yes then I may be the injectors.

yes the rail pressure valve is allowing the pressure to bleed off, or an injector is allowing it usaully its more then on to cause a no start issue. a bad injector does not always dump diesel into the oil all 4 times i have had the problem their was not a drop of diesel in my oil.
Thanks for the replies. The truck does not have any type of fueling box on it and never has. I dont know the exact mileage but I am assuming it is over 100k. Doesnt sound like its a small simple problem. I imagine he will have to take it in to a shop somewhere.

Suprised it hasn't come up yet.... "cracking" an injector (line) basically creates a large loss of psi in the rail and the engine won't start further complicating things. Your fuel log, lines, and cross tubes are nothing more than a HIGH pressure resivior for the injectors. If you loosen a line, you create a loss of psi to all the injectors. DRB, rail set point, rail psi and some fuel return tests are in your future.
Well, here is the latest. My friend wound up disconnecting the batteries for a while and now the truck starts. All the codes are gone too. It still starts harder than it should but at least it does start. We never did crack an injector line. He is now looking for someone reputable in the area to look at it. Anyone know of someone around the Killeen, Tx area who is pretty sharp on these trucks?
Thanks
