04.5 2500 wont start

i was referred to this site by a friend who said you guys are very smart and helpful. i hope he's right.

so i was driving my truck last friday and the transmision started acting up and not shifting when its supposed to so i parked it for the weekend. when i went to start it monday it wouldnt start. it cranks but wont fire. when i turn the key on i dont hear the fuel pump prime itself and the wait to start light comes on with the rest of the gauges but goes out imediatly. i checked to plug to the fuel pump and there is no power to it with the key on and i tried to hook my buddies scanner to the truck but it wouldnt make a connection.

any advice would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the DTR.

Check your batteries and cables. Look at the connection for the ground cable to the block on both sides.

As far as being smart...

Did you check the batteries? The cables at the posts? Are there any codes?

oliszew2 is a friend of mine so let me add a few things...

1. He connected an OBDII scanner to the port and could not read the computer. According to him, it was a professional scanner and not a "wallmart special".

2. He connected a test light to the electrical plug for the fuel pump located on the back of the fuel filter and did not get any voltage.

3. The truck cranks with no hesitation. It just won't start...

3. I'm the guy that recommended he try this site. You guys have been very helpful in the past, and he could really use your help...

I'd look at fuses, then look around the ECM for wires that were messed up.

He may have a bad ECM.

Give the pump 12 volts and see if it runs.

couldnt find any bad fuses in the box, i dont know if there are any other fuses somewhere else. i'll check for bad wires around the ecm and try putting power to the fuel pump tomorrow. is there an easy way to do that? cause its pretty **** tight behind the pump where the plug goes

and hows the key method work for getting codes?

thanks for all the help its greatly appreciated

Here a couple links you might find useful. The first is for retrieving the codes by manipulating the ignition key.

http://wiki.dieseltruckresource.com/...uster_Overview

The vid in that link does not work, see this thread...

Adam,
Here are a couple of ideas I pulled from various other ECM posts. See if any of these help.

1. check for a blown fuse. possibly fuse number 38 or 40

2. Hey guys, Im trying to help a guy with a 03 1 ton auto. He says the gauges started acting up, then it died. So what I know so far, the volt, fuel gauge will not read, lift pump will not come on. Truck will crank fine, lights come on fine. Told him to do the key trick, but no codes. Had a buddy put a snap on scanner on it, it would not turn on. Checked the voltage at the obII, only have 5volts. Pulled the plug off the ecm, only have 5volts to the ECM. I was thinking the ECM has to recieve 12 volts and then it reduces power to the sensors. Does anyone know what pin should have what? Im thinking voltage problem.... Load test batteries. One or both probably dead

3. So I recently posted about my truck not firing, since then I have let it set and just stop smashing my head on the wall. I took both battery cables off and let it set for few hours and now it starts. I am totally lost. It has been acting up for last three weeks it runs fine no rough idle no loss of power nothing it will just shut down radomly some times at low speed pulling in or out of parking spots or while driving or while just idling???? I have recetly replace batteries fuel filter and checked all grounds I can find on fenders and motor etc. No codes show up I do have a diablo flash tuner which ever since first problem few weeks ago I have not used I set it back to stock and have left it alone to try to figure out issue. Any chance my ecm memory or ecm itself is shot?? Thanks guys just out of thoughts... sounds like a weak lift pump

4. Checked batteries and are OK. Diconnected both batteries and reconnected, still no good. Pulled all fuses and checked them all OK. Turn key on and now ECM is working again. Must have been a bad connection on one of the fuses. When the ECM was not powered up we had no guages working, no lift pump, and no communication with the ECM with a scan guage.

5. On the 3rd gens, during start up the pump runs for 25secs and then shuts off. At all other times it runs continuously. If you turn the key on and don't crank it, the lift pump will run for 5 seconds and then shut off. So if you put a test light on the plug, you will only have voltage to the plug for the first 5 seconds.
