Angry Rebuilt NV4500 by Questionable Shop

I broke down near Moab, UT while pulling a 5K trailer heading to Houston. Apparently my input shaft and main shaft were ground to pieces. I had to have a questionable shop rebuild my NV4500 and all they salvaged were the original 1,2,3,4, and 5th gears. They gave me a 12K/12Month warantee.
Now that I have put 1K on my rebuilt tranny I have some questions. Before the rebuild, 1st was difficult to shift into, the rest of the gears were great. Now 1st, and 2nd are difficult to shift into. In fact, I usually have to double clutch it to shift from 1st, to 2nd. Do new synchros take a while to seat, or is there a problem. They did put in new bearings, seals, input & main shafts, and new synchros. It is filled with the correct Syn Torq oil etc. Just heard that rebuilding manual transmissions is a science of sorts.

A bearing blew up as I was coasting down a hill which sent metal flying into all of the main shaft and input shaft mesh points. And no, the tranny was not low on oil.

Cool

Sorry to hear of your plite. But, no the syncros do not need to brake in.
When you say it shift`s hard, are you referring to shifter is stiff/unwilling to go into gear. Or grinding when going into gear. Did the shop replace the synco`s, and hubs. The metal contamination will cause hard shifting.
Here`s the problem. If you had it done at a not so good shop, you`ll never feel comfortable with it. Take it to a quality shop, have them go through it or buy a reman so you can trust it. Getting sidelined in nomansland really sucks. Good luck.

Hey BigBlue24, I had the rear countershaft bearings blow and go flying all over as well, I guess while coasting as well. The groove at the end of the countershaft where the snap ring goes was 90% ground off and all the other stuff on there was just loose. Does that sound familiar?

Yep, When I saw the guts of mine, it was so bad I could not believe I was able to limp to the shop off the side of the highway.

Bigblue, how do you like those buckshot mudders? I just put the exact same tires on mine but she broke down a week later so I haven't gotten to try them out. I'm hoping I can put a new countershaft and bearings in the tranny and it'll be good to go, but this will be my first time taking it apart. Any knowhow you have about that will be greatly appreciated.

The Diesel Is too heavy for swampy clay-like mud at my folks place in Washington. It goes, but not nearly as good as my 4 banger Isuzu Trooper beater/rally truck. Maybe with lockers the mighty cummins could put all that power to the ground. Here in Utah, you can't stop it up in the rocky hills. I am very impressed with the dry ground traction of the buckshots. Watch out for rocks, soft rubber, mine are all cut up from the rocky mud bogs here in UT.
I don't know much about Tranny Rebuildin' someone else could chime in on that one.

Shops ?

I live close to there. Who did the work ? Have you given them a chance to correct it ? Hope it wasn't a dealer, they really suck. Six States has a good rep and has redone work for me.

I don't think Schafer Auto Clinic of Monticello, UT will do anything about the stiff shifts. It does not grind at all, just hard to shift into gear when rolling. I only have about 1 K on the rebuild, maybe she'll losen up a bit after some more miles.
