General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

My work truck is Duramax (no, I don't own the company!) so I've got experience with both brands. Let me put it this way. I would pick my Dodge/Cummins but if I was buying a truck for my wife, it would be a Duramax. I'll just leave it at that!

I like I-6's for sure. The Ford 300 I-6 was the last one you could get in a pick-up truck, They where excellent motor's and used in everything from Bronco's to at least F-250's. I was truly sad when Ford quit producing them.
As someone else stated, the V-8 DD's weren't a lot to brag about. But CAT and EMD build some excellent V-8 and larger V diesel engine's. Probably the most compelling part for the I-6 is less moving parts. So less to go wrong.

Dad has an 02 dmax, it has been a great truck. If chevy had offered a body style that was likemy quad cab dodge, I would have bought it instead.

I was not brand loyal when I went shopping in '03 for the wife's new truck.
There just wasn't a crew cab 3/4 ton Chevy/GMC to be found with a six speed in fromt of a diesel.
Like it has been pointed out before, Isuzu has been building diesel engines for a very long time. The name "DuraMax" was originally used for their inline six put in medium duty trucks.
If the DuraMax was not a good enough engine, wouldn't they have re-engineered it by now? By that I am referring to the Ford 6.0 debacle.

If I already owned a Cummins for a real truck, and I wanted a dedicated drag truck.

Had a 05 3500 dually for 2 years , could not get the truck to stop vibrating. Am now running an 07 gmc. The bottom line for me is the dodge was good for heavy stuff , pulling 15K or more for 500,000 miles. Great work truck. I already have 5 of those so i went with the smooth vib free gmc hd and love everything about it . I figure run it for the 100,000 mile warr. and trade it in .Wife wont travel in a truck that is 15 years old with 300,000 miles anyway. Many others in my region have commented on how there fleet of duros have been fairly trouble free, ie injectors and these guys run the trucks hard. just my 2 cents.

I do not like a GM truck with a V8 diesel, but I like GM's Chevrolet Trail Blazer with the 4.2 liter I-6 gasoline engine and would like to see it in the 1500 pickups instead of the 4.3 liter V6. I have become an I-6 internal combustion engine lover whether it is a gas or diesel engine.

NO, I DEFINITELY WOULD NOT DRIVE A CHEV or GMC PICKUP WITH A V8 DIESEL ENGINE EVEN IF THERE WERE NO OTHER DIESEL PICKUPS AVAILABLE, NOR IF IT WAS GIVEN TO ME FOR FREE. The same goes for a Dodge if powered by a V8 diesel engine.

If given to me I would just trade it in for a pickup with a V8 gasoline engine like the Ford pickups I drove for years, because I did not think the 6.2, 6.5 and 7.3 diesels were worth owning. If I ever buy a car it will be a VW I-4 diesel or a BMW I-6 diesel if they become available on the North American Continent. If I purchase an automobile in the near future it will have an I-6 gasoline engine like the BMW 353i.
