The key to the noise they make is resonance. The exhaust exits under the truck and that makes kind of an enclosed space. Remember how your truck sounds inside the garage or under an overpass?? Or how you can sing in the shower and it seems to sound much better?? It's the same principle at work here. If the gawish trucks had stacks on them you wouldn't hear them so much.

This is right for the most part.........they also have a throttle advance that speeds the engine to around 1500 rpm when they cycle the hydraulic system. A good crew (driver and loader) on a good route can pick about 30 ton in a 10 hour work day.

I found if I drop the auto into 1ST and rev it up, it does sound very much like our old garbage trucks...(old Ford L9000's)
The drivers of the old trucks would run around the neighborhoods in low gear and only would upshift when they got out on the main roads.
They'd really rap that engine out in 1st as they rounded the block and then let off and let the engine braking slow them back to the brisk walk for the garbagemen.

Are route is through 2 camp grounds. On a normal day we do around 12 ton. It takes us 4 hours, but thats at a steady run ( and I do mean run) our boss never hits the breaks! We even cycle on the run. On holiday weekends we can do around 20-24 ton with both trucks, then the auctual park is around 8-12 tons. We put all of that in a roll off compactor.

The most our truck weighed on the scale at the landfill was 56,000 lbs. That sucker was sagging good! Good ole tri-axle rear loader.

And thy are right about the hydro pump. its always on and they are usually big and loud too. Plus it has to run the air to the breaks and all in cab accesories (our truck is old so they might not have all of this).

Are we talking about "actual garbage trucks" or Fords?

buddy used to work for city.

on slow days, they would go and ride around and look for folks "borrowing" city garbage cans. if a house went empty, someone would snag thier trash can so they would have 2 cans & twice the trash.

he would either get the can, if there was no static,
or call the cops to come "repo" the garbage cans.

now you know why they have serial #'s....

Boss, that sounds like WORK.

i used to sling trash at Lenoir Rhyne college.
http://www.lrc.edu/

pick up every tuesday, IIRC.
the science lab would dissect small animals and dump them in the trash can right in front of the main doors where they walked out.

WHEW!!! that was something.

i think we had a pickup truck load from all of campus.
