Why Dyno Tuning is Important

So you got your new tuner/turbo/sticks installed and your truck rocks now, right? But what are you missing? Only a dyno can really tell you.

We have had a dyno for about 6 years and I have done thousands of runs on as many cars and trucks and we are always learning something on the rollers.

Brett, our tech, spend a full day (46 runs) doing nothing but playing with the timing and fuel plate on his 97 12v. This truck was making mid 5's for HP with the first run and came out with an amazing 636 with nothing but tuning. It also cleaned up a ton and was more driveable.

For the 3rd gen guys, the Smarty is generally the hot ticket. BUT, what settings should you go with? Most guys go for level 9 and it does feel better than stock, but is it right??? Most times, the answer is "No" Most trucks that we see, including my own, make more power on "7". Many trucks like the even numbered SWs with a little timing added in. 03-04 trucks like more timing than the later rigs. The point is, you really need to spend a little time on the rollers dialing in your combination to make sure you are getting the most from what you have.

Another caveat for those who are drag racing... we have found that the best dyno tune, the best road tune and the best drag racing tune may all be a little different!

Anyway, happy motoring and see you on the dyno soon!

For sure! For twins guys, its even more important. Getting the wastegate(s) set right is a challenge and every truck is a little different!

It would be nice to have access to a dyno all day to "tune" on it...

How much would that run for an hour? 8 hours? unlimited runs?

I can't say we aren't spoiled by having our own dyno, it is pretty cool. But for customers, it generally only takes 1-3 hours of dyno time depending on the combination. So $125-$375 max will get it done. For most trucks, an hour does it.

They have come down in price a lot. And you can check Racingjunk.com, there are always one or two for sale cheap. New, if you can sink it in the ground, you are looking at around $40-50k for just the load unit and dyno, plus whatever modules you might want, a laptop, printer, etc.

Seen a dynojet with everything to make it work go for about $20k here recently. Would be a cool toy to have the in the garage, not sure how the neighbours would feel about it though.

Yeah a local dyno would be nice. Since I have not even messed with the timing at all in my truck.

Erik makes some great points...we have spent around 3-4 hours in total tuning his truck, between the turbo swaps and injector changes and different tunes from the Smarty! His truck has been nothing short of amazing with all the tuning at it...it loves it!!!

I have a '07 that has some turbo and injector work done and I thought that after I hit 600hp on the dyno that it would translate to instant track times...but i learned that my Dyno tune IS NOT my track tune.

With the amount of fuel I need to spool well on the dyno, KILLS my 60' time and spool on the road.

I picked up 2.5 tenths at the track by taking fuel away from my dyno tune!

So like Erik states what feels right for the dyno may not be the best and may not run the fastest!!

So go out and find your local dyno shop, plop down some coin and give your truck what it deserves!!

You also deserve the satisfaction of knowing if your butt dyno is even close or not!!!
